This Monday, my wife and I will be flying to Galveston for the first time.
We are planning on spending about 5 or 6 hours shopping and sight-seeing. If
anyone can offer suggestions as to a good place for lunch and any
peculiarities about the airport, I sure would appreciate it. Also, any
suggestions regarding transportation would also be appreciated - car rental
is too expensive for just a few hours :-(.

Make sure your charts are up to date. Galveston recently got a control
tower (well, a couple of years ago). The runways are good quality, and
13 has an ILS. There are lots of helicopters that operate to the
parallel taxiway to 17.

Moody Gardens is walking distance, and the Lone Star Flight Museum is on
the airfield. Both easily will fill up 5 or 6 hours.

The FBO can probably arrange a taxi. They can also suggest food places
(I was based at Galveston for a while, but it was 5 years ago!)

Thanks for your comments and suggestions. GLS is a Class D airport. Rest
assured, I have current charts :-) as well as a current A/FD. In fact, I had
to buy a new San Antonio sectional last week. It seems as though when ever I
want to make one of these cross country flights there is at least one or two
sectionals, I have to replace. I flew to Mustang Beach (RAS) last month and
had to buy two new charts for that flight. I never fly with outdated charts.

I thought about the taxi this morning before reading your reply - great
idea. My wife was looking at Galveston's bus route. I'm not sure if that
will work for us or not but there is the taxi :-), and either of those are
lot less than a rental car.

This is a Mother's Day trip for my wife. There is a quilt store near the
airport that I'm taking her to visit (and watch my $$$ "fly").

I second Dylan's and Dan's recommendations. I was based out of Houston
Gulf with Dylan when it was still open (closed 2002).

Gaido's (43'rd-ish and seawall) is upscale seafood. Adjacent is Caseys
(owned by them, not so stuffy)

Another place on Seawall is The Spot - Awesome burger joint, good
atomosphere. Lots of motorcycles on the sidewalk in front of it.

The Strand is their "entertainment district" located on the east end,
essentially old "downtown" Galveston. Lots of shops, bars and tourist
traps.

Reconsider the rental car - it may be the cheapest part of the trip,
transit wise. Cab fare x a couple trips will likely meet or exceed the
cost of a compact rental car. Galveston doesn't have a lot of excess
tourist taxes.

Dave, thank you so much for you comments and suggestions. We looked at the
Gaido's menu on-line and their prices are just a tad bit high for what we
would like to pay for a meal. That certainly doesn't mean the food isn't
worth it :-). The Spot sounds like it has possibilities. After all, we do
fly some 60 miles just to eat at DQ --- go figure --- LOL

We'll make a final decision on the rental car once we get the actual prices
and do some comparison. What I have been using was the quotes given on-line.

Back from GLS. We had a great time and again, thanks for all of the
suggestions and comments. Evergreen Aviation, the FBO, had rental cars for
$25 for 4 hours so that worked great for us. We ended up eating at The Spot
and had shrimp :-). BTW, Evergreen Aviation is one of the best FBO's I have
encountered yet. Really great folks there.
