yEnc is an encoding scheme, not a graphics format. It can be used
to post any type of binary. It's primary advantage is a reduction
in the as-posted size of a file by some 39% over the more common
Uuencode. It seems that the most often cited reason for universal
hatred of yEnc is that Outhouse Depressed doesn't support it, a
rather weak argument at best.

What is wrong with posting just a dozen or so
images per day? Is there some urgency that requires
a whole series to uploaded all at once?

ended up downloading a small program from the sight attached below. It
creates a shortcut on the desk top called 'OeyEnc Loader' which opens
'Outlook Express' and allows it to read yEnc post so long as the yEnc is
written into the subject heading.

This is exactly the same I am using, however, the problem with the most
recent YEnc posts lies within you last sentence, "so long as the yEnc is
written into the subject heading".
Unfortunately, the person posting it (oh so wiesly chosing yEnc as a handle)
ignored this most important rule about yEnc.

It is imparative the term is to be included in the subject line so that
either we can read the posts or others, who simply do not wish to read yEn
posts at all (for w/e reason) can properly filter them.

Some folks really seem to be lacking certain manners... :/

Their loss that you don't view them. I have the means to see all of them.
But I fully agree with you that they should consider others when posting.
Lots of folks are still on dial-up....money the economy or whatever.
These are the folks I feel for.
Some folks are not internet savvy and that's okay, but you and others
have made it to the newsgroups and I think that's great.
There is absolutely NO need for folks to invest in software or newsgroup
providers if their ISP carries newsgroups. I do however have XNEWS and
that's great for viewing and it's free.
I think the biggest gripe is that the power posters don't even include
an index. If they did then you could choose the photos that you wanted
to download.
Indexes are easy to make......it just boils down to lazyness. It's sad
that the time and effort that folks take to post the stuff and more than
half will not view them. Sad!
Now I'm sure that someone will come along and say tough. But that just
shows how selfish the person is. I know one that will bite on this post
in a milliesecond...lol

Outlook and Thunderbird would have incorporated it if they felt it was
necessary for the most users.
However, look at how few folks use newsgroups. That's the
key....profitable to incorporate...no

I downloaded XNEWS. I use it mainly in other groups where the posters
don't feel so high and mighty. It works fine.
But in this group many folks have requested no floods and please post in
jpg. DUH!!!!

But they will continue to do their thing...good luck to them, they'll
have the "few"die hards, that are clueless to others around them..
Selfish gits!!!

Would I use it here on the flooders...absolutely not.

availible on the USAF/ NASA and USN sites.

Not a shame to killfile if the work were their own like Glen/Dale and
others then it might be a shame but your right it is a I dont give a
rats ass attitude toward others that has all but started to ruin this group.

So flood away and post in YENC no use complaining you just need to go to
the NASA site and you will find most if not all the photos that have
been posted. You might also want to visit the USAF site for the high rez
shots there.

Let them flood and post just killfile them and trust me you are not
missing anything.

You are entirely wrong. The spec for yEnc itself quotes the number,
I didn't, but since you're obviously so ignorant, try posting the
exact same JPEG with Uuencode and with yEnc and see for yourself.
The actual size of the binary doesn't change, of course, but almost
all of the Uue overhead is eliminated by yEnc resulting in a much
smaller as-posted size. Were it not for this fact, why would it
have been invented and why would so many people, all far more
knowledgeable then you, quote the same reduction?

Properly written apps will either automatically add "yEnc" to the
subject line or require the poster to add it.

JRW, I suppose killfiling or filtering is an effective way to rid
oneself from yEnc and/or flooding, but whether the posts/day from
any given OP is a couple, a dozen or so, a few hundred, or
thousands, nobody is forced to look at them. Yes, it takes some
time to download the headers for things some presumeably don't
want but I think the number of dial-up users today vs. cable
broadband or DSL is small enough that large numbers of headers
shouldn't be a problem. And, in NGs that are very
active/prolific, especially those posting large attachments, yEnc
actually helps everyone but particularly the dial-up folk because
of it's very large reduction in as-posted size.

Personally, I post in Uuencode but I am not at all averse to
yEnc, largely because Xnews decodes both with ease and I'm not
even really aware of the encoding scheme except that it does say
"yEnc".

What do you consider the threshold of flooding? No one is forced to
open every post or any at all so what's the big fuss? If this NG
has a collective strong feeling about on-topic posts, max
posts/day, and encoding scheme(s), perhaps an enforceable FAQ
should be adopted to guide people.

Just post your pictures as is, of course after getting a decent provider who
will offer you a broadband connection. To all you yEnc fans: wake up to the
21st century. You don't have to use dial-up connections anymore. I have
broadband. Next month I will be connected to a glass-fibre network that is
being installed in the whole town I live in, so my connection speed will be
even higher. Stop farting around with your stupid encoding end get a useful
provider.

True, you don't have to open every post.
But when some moron decides to flood the NG with 15,000 posts, at J3 did
recently, this is bound to cause problems. There are people active who post
in formats / numbers that most people do not appreciate. But they still go
ahead, just because they can. An enforceable FAQ is not neccessary when
people just apply some common sense and remember what mommy told them about
good manners.

I appreciate both sides of the argument but, given Yenc has been out for
years and it still hasn't gained any significant market space it's a proven
dud.

As for getting additional plugins or other news readers, why bother? The
ones most of us use have been serving us perfectly well for over a decade,
cost nothing, and the newer readers don't seem to offer any significant
improvements.

I haven't read the whole thread, and likely won't, but perhaps someone
can tell me - are the two sides acting like children and calling each
other assholes yet?

the fact that many people use OE.
yEnc is a toy for people who insist on showing that they are clever.
Well, good for you. You are a clever boy, now go and do something useful,
like posting pictures as is. If you use a decent provider and connection
there is no need for these silly programs.

Overview

information regarding aviation related events, stories about
aircraft that are featured in this Newsgroup and, above all, to
share our passion for aircraft with like-minded people
regardless of nationality, race or religion.

2.
The ABPA is entirely self moderated, and there is no formal
membership criteria, or governing board. Members are free
to come and go as they wish - to contribute, or not, is entirely
voluntary. No one should feel forced to contribute to the
group, and no one should feel intimidated by the group.

3.
Users of the ABPA are legally and personally responsible for any
images they post, particularly regarding copyright
issues and suitability. As many members of the group post images
that they have taken themselves, they do occasionally
get rather upset when others post their images either without
permission, or with copyright logos removed. All
photographers have their
own ideas regarding the usage of their images, and if in doubt
about the use of in image we request that you please ask
before either posting or reusing an original image.
4.
This Guide will be amended as the need arises. Suggestions for
any changes should be posted to the Newsgroup. Any
changes receiving general agreement following a discussion will
then be included.


Posting Guidelines

1.
Aviation Only.
The ABPA is dedicated to aviation orientated subjects. However,
there are no restrictions upon the specific types of
aircraft images that can be posted to the group. Given that non
aviation subjects frequently appear at air shows and in
museums, we ask that you use the following example of an
acceptable posting... That really cool looking restored tank
featured at the
annual air show is a credit to everyone involved. So in the
context of a series of 30 or more aviation related images
regarding an air show, with 2 or 3 featuring the really cool
tank are acceptable. On the other hand posting a series of 30
images of non aviation subjects at the air show with only 1 or 2
aircraft is not acceptable.

2.
NO Blatantly Obvious Pornography...
Posters are STRONGLY REQUESTED TO REFRAIN FROM POSTING OBVIOUSLY
pornographic images. A simple
nude standing in front of an airplane is one thing, seeing a
girl playing with her #$% is another. Images featuring nudes
in a non-pornographic way, and STILL IN THE CONTEXT OF AVIATION,
are acceptable and will be referred to as
Nude-Hangar Queens (or Kings).
Therefore, the group would appreciate the wording Nude-Hangar
Queen (or King) within the image's description. The
only exceptions to this would something like the nose art on say
a WWII bomber which can be a touch racy.

3.
No Multimedia or Multi-Part files....
As the name implies, this Newsgroup is for posting "Binaries
Pictures Aviation", that is, photos, and artworks relating
to aviation. Multimedia, video clips and sound files are not
welcome here, mainly due to bandwidth requirements. However
references to multimedia aviation related postings in the NG
alt.binaries.multimedia.aviation, and other newsgroups, or
on a website are acceptable in this Newsgroup. The reason
Multi-part attachments are discouraged is that some news
servers may lose a portion of the messages, and some news
readers are not able to assemble the parts properly.

4.
Image Size....
Many visitors and posters have slow dial-up internet connections
and/or are download limited, which makes it difficult to
view large attachments (400Kb plus). File sizes in the range 100
to 300Kb in JPEG format generally give adequate
resolution. If viewers would like a picture at higher resolution
they should check with the poster by email.

5.
Image Descriptions are strongly encouraged for ALL IMAGES.
Large numbers of files (plus 10) without a description of what
the image is, or index image displaying the images in the
series, is not considered an acceptable posting. If your
favorite aviation subject is civil airliners for example, few things
will match the frustration you feel when you unknowingly
download 30 images of some WWII warbirds. Granted the
logical thing to do is
grab a couple first, but if it was an event where both types of
aircraft are featured what then? For this reason the use of
one of the very popular freeware image index programs is
encouraged, failing that at the very least please include a
reasonable description of the image. This also has the added
advantage of making it easier to track comments made about
your images, and identifying a particular series of images to
the group.

6.
Large Floods of images...
Floods of images should be restricted to approx. 50 images per
day. We as a group would prefer to see them over several
days, rather than all at one time. Doing so, and keeping the
images to a size of about 300k, or less enables other posters
to post groups of images. Part of the reason for this is that
many local servers have a limited retention based upon size.
For example; if you post a flood of 300 or more images all in
the 500k range at 1:00am, and then at 10:00am someone
else does the same thing, and yet a third person posts at
10:00pm. On some of the smaller servers someone is either not
going to see their images posted until the next day, or possibly
have images bounced off of the NG. For people using
independent newsgroup servers this is not a problem, however for
many of the smaller servers it can be.

7.
NO Political, social, or religious discussions of ANY sort...
We all have our opinions regarding religion, social issues, and
politics. However given the strong emotions that these
types of discussion frequent cause IT IS STRONGLY preferred that
members DO NOT engage in these types of debates
with the newsgroup ABPA. Besides if you check the title of this
Newsgroup there is not a mention of politics, social
issues, or religion within it. Wishing someone a well meaning
nationalistic or religious message such as Happy 4th of
July, Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah etc. is however considered
acceptable...

8.
YENC - is NOT Acceptable.
Yenc encoding is not yet standardized, so there are different
versions in use and many news readers do not recognize any
of them. The same applies to any other non-standard posting
formats. To avoid upset, please use only the standard
UU-Encoding when posting your pictures. Besides, if you are
looking for discussion, or conversation regarding an image,
you are far more likely obtain it with a standard format
posting, rather than a non-standard one. To
be fair about it, if Yenc or some other method does become a
recognized standard then this will quickly be amended.


9.
No HTML within postings...
The Usenet service (newsgroups) has traditionally been
text-based, and most dedicated news readers still are. However,
since Outlook Express and the major browsers have been able to
access newsgroups, and their format of choice is HTML,
many users are posting to the newsgroups in HTML format.
Unfortunately, this means that all the cool looking fancy
backgrounds, special characters, bold or multi-colored fonts,
inserted lines or other effects appear as dozens of lines of
seemingly unintelligible characters interspaced with a few lines
of text to those who still use text-based readers. As a
courtesy to these people it is suggested that you refrain from
posting in HTML if possible.


10.
NO Inflammatory Remarks (Flaming)
Deliberately making derogatory or inflammatory remarks (often
referred to as "flaming") about people posting to the
ABPA, and/or any aspect of their postings, WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.

This does NOT include comments such as:

(a) Constructive criticisms or suggestions as to how to improve
someone's images (however, saying a person's posting is
nothing but crap is not acceptable),

(b) Corrections to miss-identification of aircraft, pilots etc...

(c) Corrections to obviously innocent mistakes.

Harsh, or insulting criticism about simple mistakes, or a
less-than professional picture, when not deserved, can be
particularly disturbing to newbies who may never return to the
Group. Let us try to maintain the friendly atmosphere that
has been established in ABPA over many years.

11.
When responding to a LONG posting....
It is requested that you restrict the reposted text to only
those parts that are pertinent to your response. Reposting an
entire message when responding to a long posting not only
clutters the system up but is also a discourtesy to those trying
to read your contribution. We all make this mistake now and
again, however if, and when you do, please don't be offended if you
receive a GENTLE Chastisement from the other members of the group.


Conclusion...


Newbies to the group are encouraged to "lurk" for a few days
BEFORE posting images... Doing this will help you get a
feel for how the group operates, and what is considered
acceptable behavior. Above all else though if you have a question,
or are unsure about an issue PLEASE ASK!!! You will find that
most members of the group are reasonably friendly, and very eager to
help new posters.

None of these rules are chiseled in stone, and there will always
be exceptions. This guide intended to be just a guide and
nothing more.. The group at large asks that the spirit of this
text be adhered to. This Guide is applicable ONLY TO THE
NEWSGROUP alt.binaries.aviation.pictures, other newsgroups may

There are a great number of NGs where all you see is yEnc. In
places where there's wild disagreement and blind hatred, it is
always, always coming from the OUthouse Depressed crowd that refuse
to either get a real news reader or the plug-in that will allow OE
to decode yEnc. It isn't evil, it isn't just for porn, and it isn't
a dud. If the Luddites of the world want to stick their heads in
the sand and pretend that yEnc is no good, that's there choice,
they'll just miss out on a tremendous amount of good content in
thousands of NGs.

What part of Multi part did you miss in rule 3

And if you have been here for years you would remember Andrew who worked

The part I missed was that nobody has done anything about the
alleged flooder. As for Andrew, he has shown himself to be a
bigot and a fool.

If you people want to have order around here, you need to publish
your FAQs/posting guidelines often and take agressive action
against violators. You also need to partially rewrite the
document so that the most important items, such as max posts/day,
no yEnc, no multi-part files, etc. are up front where they are
easy to see. As it is, the document meanders around and the
salient points are buried in long paragraphs.

Now, as to flooding, if the group wants only 50/day or less, I
guess that's OK. I don't have any aircraft pictures so it doesn't
affect me. But, it reminds me of a couple of other NGs I monitor
that seem to be living in the past before there was broadband
because they have very restrictive file size limits - both KB and
pixels and the same 50 limit. Who cares how many posts/day are
made? No one is forced to download them all or any at all, that's
what freedom of choice is all about.

And again, this is the first time I've ever seen this document. I
don't follow links in anybody's posts because it's too dangerous
so if you're posting the FAQs that way, it explains why I haven't
seen them before. Plus, I'd wager that the people you guys don't
seem to like haven't seen it, either.

Why change newsreaders when the one provided for free is perfectly
servicable? Yes I tried some plug-ins but, like most, they weren't effective
and made the default product unreliable.

That's right, I denigrate the stupid and the ignorant that insist
on using Outhouse Depressed and thus blindly hate yEnc just
because you can't read it. As to OE being more popular than yEnc,
you are dead wrong. There are literally thousands of NGs where
most or all binary posts are done with yEnc while the number of
OE bigots is far less than the content on the NGs. You are the
loser for refusing to recognize the obvious.

Xnews is also free, it supports yEnc and it can decode multi-part
binaries in-line. Also, Xnews is up to 5 times faster displaying
a JPEG. Don't believe it, time it yourself. You need to get a
life beyond Outhouse Depressed. Your blind hatred and ignorance
is depriving you of millions of pictures posted to thousands of
NGs which you can't see because you're wed at the hip to Bill the
Gates crap software.

Fact is, you're dead wrong. Take a look around Usenet to places
that are very active with JPEGs, movies, and MP3s and you will
see literally thousands of NGs where yEnc is the primary encoding
scheme. As for here, the collective group has decided to
intentionally stay with an obsolete encoding scheme only to
pacify the ignorant OE users.

yEnc causes no problems whatsoever except that Outhouse Depressed
dumb users can't see it. yEnc reduces the as-posted size of a
binary attachment up to 39% compared to Uuencode. If you're not
too stupid to Google, look for the author's description of the
standard and also Jeremy Nixon's essay. There're minor technical
problems with yEnc but zero problem in practice.

Get a life beyond Microcrap.

You're reaping what so many other clueless MSOE users have sown by their
intemperate rants against YENC (and other useful techniques). I, for one,
would be more inclined towards paying attention to what they (and you) want
if only they had not started off by accusing me of all kinds of things on no
basis whatsoever other than I posted using YENC. When they did that, they
poisoned the well... and now they (and you) get to drink deep.

I repeat: MSOE is a crippled newsreader. I've posted before what the minimum
requirements for a real newsreader are; MSOE fails on all counts. If MSOE
meets your requirements, by all means continue to use it... just don't expect
any sympathy if other people, using real newsreaders, do so in ways that
cause trouble for crippled newsreaders. We who use real newsreaders do not
_have_ to accommodate you who use crippled ones. You do _not_ get a vote on
what I post, when I post it, and what techniques I use to post it. If you do
not wish to use something which can download it, despite the swarm of
cheap/free real newsreaders available for Windows and Mac and (probably,
given the Tux mentality, I don't do penguins so I don't know for sure,
corrections invited) Linux, you are free to do so... Too bad that you won't
be able to see the pix, but that's your choice. Just as you can't make me
post using techniques you like, I can't make you use a real newsreader. I

I'm afraid you're spitting into a strong wind here. OE users are
absolutely adament about using it as a news reader even though
you are completely correct that it is crippled by being an add-on
the to E-mail client portion of O6. What OE bigots cannot seem to
understand is that it is slow to decode pictures inline, has
difficulty with multipart binaries, and cannot (yet) decode yEnc.
People who really don't want to get a real news reader and want
to stick with OE are in the vast majority in many NGs, hence it
is impossible to promote the idea that yEnc is a valid encoding
scheme and takes a rather large part of the encoding overhead out
making it faster to upload and faster to download.

It's not required at all. A decent newsreader will decode yenc
without the word in the subject.

every pic I post is posted with YENC and has 'yenc' in the subjectline. If
they don't want to see it, they can damn well killfile it. I don't give a
