I saw a video of a F35 that could vector its jet downwards, and take off
vertically. Is that to be standard on the F35 or will it be an option?

There will be 3 variants of the F-35. The STOVL version is going to the US
Marines and the Brits

It's not really an 'option' because the aircraft must be built for STOVL
use....you couldn't convert either of the other two models once built.

Yeh, I know. Option was a bad choice of words. The Aus Navy has said it
was going to acquire STOL F35s to operate from a Landing Platform-type ship.
I never realised that the F35 was capable of vertical takeoff.

Only capable of vertical take off with minimal loads as I understand it.

The three versions are:

CTOL - Conventional Take Off Landing
STOVL - Short Take Off, Vertical Landing (noting the emphasis on short take
off rather than vertical).
CV (from memory) - Carrier Version

Australia would most likely purchase the CV for somewhat similar reasons
they prefer the F-111's with the longer wings.

RAN will not be using F-35, the intention is to replace the F/A-18 and the
F-111's. This would make it a RAAF only aircraft as the Navy have not
operated any fixed wing combat aircraft for quite some time.
