XM Weather - Sirius merger with XM Radio by
Roy N5804F
Sirius is making headway in merging with XM Radio.
No one seemed to be asking at the Anti Trust hearing whether or not Sirius
will continue to maintain the XM aviation weather services.
Or if they do, at what cost to the users ?
I would imagine that this will be another User Fee that is going to...

ILS sans identification by
[email protected]
Anyone have a reference for a requirement to identify an ils or vor
prior to it's use in the USA?
Secondly, is there any reference to the type of identification
required? For example, would checking that the primary flight display
is displaying the correct identifier suffice? Or is there...

Route Planning by
Kevin Clarke
Question for folks who've done this a heck of a lot more than me.
How do you plan routes? I have a PA28-180/G that I fly. The navdata is
always kept up to date so I can always file /G. Which I suppose might be
the best answer here. But the vagaries of ATC, especially in the
Northeast US make me...

Instrument departure, non-IFR airport by
[email protected]
Recently I tried to depart from an non-tower airport that has no
instrument approach procedure, and hence no instrument departure. I
was told that I could not get a clearance on the ground, even with
VIFNO etc., and that I would have to depart VFR and pick my clearance
up while airborne. The...

How wide is an NDB approach course? by
Jose
What is the protected area under an NDB approach course? Since the
course guidance is cruder than an ILS, I'd expect it would be wider, but
how much wider? I ask also in the context of when I should consider
myself "established" on course (for purposes of descent).

XM Wx Garmin 430/430W with Garmin GDL-69? by
[email protected]
I recently swapped my 430 for a 430W. Is anyone using XM weather from
a GDL-69 on either a 430 or 430W? How do you find it on that
small display? What about getting METARs, for example -
is there too much button pushing, or not so bad? Would you make the
same purchase decision again or put the...

First LPV approach by
Viperdoc[_4_]
We did our first LPV approach in a turbine Bonanza at OSH today, with my
buddy as PIC and me acting as the safety pilot. His plane is equipped with a
Garmin 530W/430W combo, with GDL 69A and Stormscope, along with TCAS.
His autopilot has roll steering, and made all of the course and approach...

Descending from MEA to land under VFR by
kevmor
In the regulations it says that you can land at an airport without an
IAP if you descend from the MEA and land under VFR, but if there is a
MOCA, can you use that instead?

YES! Passed the check ride by
Kevin Clarke
Whew. Well that was a grind.
After 17 mos of training I took the check ride today. It got scrubbed a
couple of time because of weather, winds once, snow once. The day
started with a flight from KFIT down to KSFZ to meet the examiner.
Beautiful flight 24 minutes or so down to Rhode Island. Winds...

Rolling a Non Aerobat 150 by
Tom Inglima
Spins have NEVER been in the private pilot PTS. The PTS (Practical Test
Standard) only has been in existence for around 20 years or so. The last
time spins were required for a Private Certificate was back in the early
1950's or maybe the late 1940's. Note that there is nothing that prevents...

Ping Sam Spade: DA versus DH on an ILS? by
Peter R.
Sam and others, I have about 1,100 hours now with about 700 of those flown
after getting my instrument rating in the US back in 2003. Since then I have
flown IFR almost twice per week.
On a web-based aviation forum there is a general disagreement of the terms DA
(decision altitude) versus DH...

VOR Approach - Can you alter it? by
gregscheetah
The VOR 16 approach to KEST is about 8deg off from the actual runway
heading. It feels like a lot more than this when you are 3 miles
out. I flew the approach and with the ground covered in snow, the
runway covered in snow, daylight, blowing snow (almost a ground
blizzard) so no airport lights,...

Safety Pilot restrictions by the Insurance Company? by
Mark Hansen
I belong to a flying club. Of the many club rules, one is that the
pilot acting as PIC must be a club member. I can certainly see where
this is necessary.
However, the Chief Pilot for the club claims that the insurance
company is requiring that a safety pilot for IFR practice must also
be a club...

I am parting with my the new Sporty's Air Facts DVD - GPS Techniques on

I just bought it and enjoyed watching it and it indeed had some useful info.

ATLANTA (Reuters) - Islam is growing fast among African
