Voluntary CAS Required by
randall g
Here in Vancouver BC, Nav Canada is proposing some airspace changes.
Among other things they are pushing "voluntary CAS (collision avoidance
system)" on the grounds that they believe it is affordable now. Is it
really? Anybody have this?
A cryptic PP presentation of the proposed changes is...

a major marital breakthrough by
Kevin Clarke
So after being licensed for 2 years now, I finally got my wife to go up
with me. I picked a mostly windless (6kts), flat grey day. No
convection, no bumps.
We departed downwind from 32 KFIT to go look at our roof. The usual
scenic first flight thing to do. At about 2300 feet she panicked (or...

Advanced rating training as Wings credit by
B A R R Y
I'm currently about 1/2 way to my instrument rating.
I've noticed that my recent training has included most of the standard
"Wings" recurrent maneuvers, albeit under the hood. If this instruction
counts, I believe all I need to cover are emergency procedures to meet
the requirements. I...

Letters on Class B altitude indications on charts by
Mxsmanic
I notice on the San Francisco TAC that there are letters next to the
altitude indications for the different areas of the Class B airspace.
I don't recall seeing these before on a TAC. The legend says only
"letters identify areas." The SFO TAC is fairly new; perhaps this
will be done with all...

Soreness after flights, and rudders by
Mxsmanic
Does flying leave you sore if you haven't flown in a while or if you
are new to flying? I'm thinking of muscle fatigue from being in an
unusual position for long periods, and in particular I'm wondering if
keeping one's feet on rudder pedals for hours at a time leads to any
soreness afterwards. ...

GPS altitude again is close to actual by
Ron Lee
I made another flight to KFTG this afternoon and periodically checked
the GPS receiver provided altitude versus my aircraft altimeter. GPS
was within 40' every time I checked (closer at times). I need to
check my last altimeter check to see if it has any errors but it is
certainly within...

CFI training cost? by
gatt
Hey, all. For purposes of ballparking my budget next year, I'm wondering
what it costs Joe Average Pilot, CP-ASEL-IA to get his CFI these days.
Any new CFIs care to discuss? Thanks!

National Seashore/bird sanctuary overflight altitudes? by
TonyR
My instructor has asked me to plan a flight that overflies
marked bird sanctuaries/seashore on the sectional, with
stops at various airports. The sectional shows the
wildlife/seashore areas close to the airports. Should I
circle before heading out over these areas to gain altitude,
or just climb...

Do you always have oxygen? by
Mxsmanic
I am curious to know how many GA pilots always have oxygen on board,
even if they don't normally fly at high altitudes. It seems like it
would be good to have around, but I don't know how much it costs. Do
oxygen systems have to be frequently topped off or inspected or
measured? Do they just...

Garmin 496 Training by

I was thinking of upgrading my 396 to the 496 and bought VFlite's
Interactive Guide to see the new features in action. It was very helpful,
but I just don't think there are enough new features (taxi guidance, AOPA
database, etc.) to justify the price tag.
I am offering...

I got a link to a slideshow of Cessna's New Generation Piston plane
that apparantly was shown at Oshkosh (I couldn't make it, so I don't
know). Did anyone on the NG actually see it? If so, what is your
opinion?
Here's the...

Float Plane and Pilot lost by
Roger (K8RI)
When we heard the Announcement on TV that a float plane had crashed
on Wixom Lake (Just NW of Midland MI) I told Joyce it had to be some
one we knew.
A float plane had departed Midland Barstow (3BS) in the afternoon and
as time wore on he appeared to be late getting back, but as with most
pilots...

Light Single at McCarran by
Dan
So what's the latest on light singles at McCarran? The last time I
tried to get in I was VFR and was curtly told that there would be a 90
minute delay for VFR arrivals. Am I better off filing IFR, or would
the delays get worse? Would I be more likely to get in IFR?
I know I can go to Henderson...

737 rudder problems of the past by
Todd Tomorrow
I'm gonna be taking 3 flights on Continental 737s around the country
in the next week or so. I've flown on many 737s in the past, but
was just curious on what finally was done about the rudder hardover
problem. Most recent stuff I can find is from around 2000, when
there was going to be some...

Q about WWII a/c by
G. Sylvester
I was just at the Museum of Flight which is an *amazing* museum. Many
of the WWII a/c have ceilings of upwards FL370. How do piston and prop
a/c have ceilings that high? Even supercharged engines I presume lose
most of their performance that high. Even more so I'd expect the prop
which...
