Flying GA into DC ADIZ by
John Doe
I need to go to DC tomorrow and I'm looking for the easiest airport to fly
into.
I'd love to fly into National but that just isn't going to happen anymore.
What's the next best choice for getting downtown? (I'd prefer to get to a
metro stop vs renting a car)
I'm looking into KHEF and I've done...

Private Pilot Examiners in Atlanta/Eastern Alabama Area by
[email protected]
Hello all.
I am getting closer to checkride time and I was wondering if anyone has
any recent experiences (good or bad) with examiners in the Atlanta
and/or eastern Alabama areas. I realize that checkrides should be
comparable regardless of the examiner, but an examiner's demeanor can
go a long...

EFlybook arrived yesterday, so here are a few observations:
Small grey tablet sized- see their website for actual dimensions.

don't lose the stylus, expensive to replace
cheesy...

Flight Planning for Long Trips by
john smith
One of the things I do when planning a long trip is to plug in the start
and end points into the flight planning software.
In the route portion I place an intermediate airport if the route has to
take a jog left or right for weather or obstacles.
This then gives me the leg distances and times...

XM Weather/Garmin 496 PIREP by
Jay Honeck
Mary and I spent several long days at OSH this week, researching our
in-cockpit weather options. Because the manufacturers of our current
GPS receivers (AvMap and Lowrance) have stupidly decided not to pursue
in-cockpit weather for their hardware, our options were extremely
limited. They...

When I got home from AirVenture, I described the GPS 496 and its
capabilities to my wife. Her first comment in reply, "Sounds expensive."

Checkride celebration by
Robert Barker
We all know about the tradition of cutting off the shirttails when a student
solos... What traditions are out there when a student passes his checkride?

Letter from TSA? by
Emily
Got one this week (or last week, I've been out of town) that says that
new rules for CFI's have been implemented, etc, etc, etc. The odd thing
is, it looks like it was printed on a $50 printer and wasn't even in an
official envelope like I'm used to seeing from the FAA. It really only
had a...

you have gone through this already.
Here are the details:
I finished my private license last novemeber. I have flown a little

Interesting Weather with XM by
Jay Honeck
Our flight to Lansing, MI Wednesday was a good example of how XM
satellite weather can really help the average GA pilot.
The plan was to fly due East to Valparaiso, Indiana, just east of the
bottom of Lake Michigan, and then hang a left toward Lansing. We've
made this trip a dozen or more times,...

Jay's "Plane Crash Video Ubersite" by
Peter Duniho
I had to laugh. :) Jay's aviation video web site is famous now (well,
about as famous as you can get on the Internet), except that it's being
touted as specifically a web site for aviation crashes.
http://www.boingboing.net/2006/08/10/plane_crash_video_ub.html
But they do say, there's no such...

Free FAA Films online by
Kev
I was playing around on video.google.com, and found some interesting
(and unintentionally humorous) FAA films.
Go to http://video.google.com and type in "faa public domain" as the
search terms.
The film on Density Altitude is a good starter, since it has the old
high schoolish film music and of...

Some questions.... by
[email protected]
--Why should you have charts on board? And can you fly without them?
--What would you do if you come to the end of your clearance limit, and
you are unable to contact ATC? (ATC is still online, just not answering
-you-)

Flying into West Yellowstone airport (WYS) by
M
We're planning to fly into West Yellowstone airport (WYS) in a Grumman
AA-5 Traveler with stock engine. The landing and takeoff will be about
200lb under gross and we plan to take off in early morning. Densitiy
altitude is of course a major concern.
Has anyone flown to that airport in similar...

Flying and capturing video by
drclive
Hi All,
I'm looking recommendation for a video camera that would stand a VFR in
a
Piper 28 Cherokee 140 or a katana DV20. I tried already with a JVC with
Hard
Drive (Model Everio G Series). It didn't work so well, it seems that
the
vibration was too much for the hard drive, so it gives recording...

Vacuum pump STC by

I would like to make my 1960 Cessna 172A IFR. Currently, I have only
venturi vacuum. My A & P stated that as there is no STC for a vacuum
pump intall, I need a form 337 field approval...I think it is form 337,
I could be wrong on that. Does anyone have information relating to
STC's and field...

Manufacturing Quality by
john smith
With the news that Piper will produce the Hondajet, I am wondering if
Piper will be able to produce the finished product to meet Honda's
quality standards.
Piper has not built anything bigger than a Malibu for 20 years.
The Cheyenne IV/LS-400 was the biggest aircraft Piper has produced.
