AOPA Sells-Out California Pilots in Military Airspace Grab? by Larry Dighera
Another attempted military airspace grab? The USMC wants to convert the San Onofre High and Low MOAs, that lie along the busy, aircraft-congested Pacific coastline, into a Restricted Area: R-2503D. The USMC say they need 38% higher Restricted Airspace to conduct live-fire artillery and aerial...

Meaning of "IC" on KPHL Frequencies? by [email protected]
I was reviewing the frequencies for KPHL over the weekend on AirNav, http://www.airnav.com/airport/Kphl and towards the end of the frequency list there is one listed as IC: 124.35. Its also a departure and approach freq, but I'd like to know what IC stands for. Any help would be appreciated!

Q by Stuart King
I was enroute from FLO direct to JZI. I was suffering in severe clear with no turbulence at all. About 20nm out, ATC gives me "N1234, proceed direct CHS Vortac and hold as published, EFC xyz". I reply "roger direct CHS and hold as published, EFC xyz, ....is there a reason for this ? " sometimes...

definition of "dual controls" by Lee Elson
91.109 prohibits some types of instruction without "fully functioning dual controls". Can anyone point to an FAA source for how this phrase is defined? While throw over yokes are dealt with in 91.109, what about dual brakes and rudders?

BGBW Approach by gwengler
Anyone know how *exactly* the missed approach works at BGBW: http://www.slv.dk/Dokumenter/dscgi/ds.py/Get/File-833/AD_2_BGBW_NDB_DME_07-1.pdf Assuming your airplane can climb with a climb gradient of 6%, where and when can you descend to 1500 (note the table at the bottom) and where is your MAP...

"Blocked" by Lee Elson
I'd like some input from those of you who are familiar with the working ATC environment. In a situation where a transmission to/from ATC is "interfered with" by a second transmission I've always believed that it is useful to let all parties know that the tranmission was blocked, even if I...

Contract Tower Program - Discussion Thread by running with scissors
from NATAC website: http://www.natca.org/currentissues/default.msp Contract Tower Program The FAA's Contract Tower Program takes air safety and sells it to the lowest bidder. It is about reducing staff and cutting all possible corners in the name of saving a buck or two. This unsafe and...

Procedure Turn by Bravo8500
I'm pretty sure this question has been asked, but I can't seem to find it. My question deals with a typical approach with a procedure turn before the FAF, could be an NDB, VOR, GPS, etc. I know what the purposes are. 1) Provide course reversal and 2) allow altitude loss from the arrival altitude to...

Transiting KCLE Class B by dutch
I have a fairly new Instrument Rating and need to fly my (non-turbo) Arrow from Chicago to Binghamton NY. The most efficient dry route appears to be V6 via Dryer, but that takes me right through the middle of the Cleveland Class B. Is this likely to be accepted as filed, or am I likely to get...

happy problem by Dave Jacobowitz
You've just passed your instrument checkride, and as a consequence you have a $50 gift certificate from your girlfriend for the local pilot shop. What do you get? Complicating matters is that I already have all the pilot toys that I need for the near term: plotter, kneeboard, flashlight, timer,...

Need an 800x600 cockpit pda/tablet! by Ben Jackson
I've been playing with the PDF approach plates. Well rendered they are easily readable at 600x800 (they're taller than they are wide, but narrower than the 4:3 aspect ratio of most display) with 16 levels of grayscale. 480x640 is pretty good with 16 levels of gray, down to right on the ragged...

Inaccurate airspeed indicator by Wyatt Emmerich
I had a my two-year transponder/static system check while visiting my mother in San Antonio. When I departed, I noticed the airspeed didn't come up like it should. I attributed this to shifting winds and assumed I had a slight tailwind. Then in cruise, I did my normal operating performance check....

NACO approach plates by J Haggerty
Just found out at work the other day that NACO/FAA have started publishing their own approach plates on line. They're actually pretty crisp looking, even when printed. You can view them here; http://www.naco.faa.gov/index.asp?xml=naco/online/d_tpp Just click on the current date range and then...

The Auction Hangar - Completely free aviation auction site. by The Auction Hangar

AVIATIONTOOLBOX: I've added your approach plates. by Kyler Laird
Thanks to Dennis Megary at MyAirplane.com, I've added the vector (PDF) approach plates to my collection. http://aviationtoolbox.org/raw_data/FAA/approaches/ There's a lot that I plan to do with these, but for now I have a terribly simple kludge for finding them...

IMC without an autopilot by Jon Kraus
Just curious as to opinions about flying in IMC without an autopilot? Does an autopilot make flying in the clouds safer or is it just a crutch for the lazy? For myself being new to IFR flying I feel safer knowing that if needed I could turn the autopilot on. Maybe it is a false sense of...
