IFR/Flight Following -- ATC Preferences? by Mitty
Departing cross country out of the Minneapolis area in severe clear, I will usually ask for either flight following or will file. I depart from KMIC, which is under the 4000 foot shelf of the MSP bravo airspace. For example, Friday I am going from KMIC to KGPZ, which is a couple hundred miles to...

IFR: How many hours did it take you? by STICKMONKE
I'm trying to determine the average hours it took for you to get your IFR rating. Just curious.

IImorrow 2001 GPS IFR Cert by Matt Young
The flying club that I am in just purchased a second 172, a really nice plane, new interior and paint and a nearly new STCd 180hp engine. Anyway, it has a IImorrow (or Apollo?) 2001 NMS GPS installed. It is not IFR certified, but pages I've found about it online seem to indicate that it can be. ...

Iis there a weather chart with cloud base and tops depicted? by Terence Wilson
Here in the San Francisco Bay Area we've had coastal clouds in the mornings with ceilings in the 1000-2000 range recently, 10-20 miles west of Oakland the clouds dissipate completely. I was wondering weather there exists a reliable way of determining the cloud tops (other than PIREPs). TIA

Illegal Immigration, the Non-Issue of the Week?????????????? by Expert Humor
The way our politicians rushed to talk about illegal immigration this week, maybe they thought it came with a free lunch. They won't do anything about it, but it will get them some money. The Expert provides the details at: http://www.ExpertHumor.com/

ILS 16 Approach HKS Timelapse with ATC COMS - Video by [email protected]
Flight from KMBO to KHKS from wheels up to wheels down time compressed from 25 minutes down to 5 minutes. KJAN approach in this video and you can see how accommodating they are when I ask for a change in my clearance. Also found it interesting they asked me how many SOB. First I have been asked...

ILS 16 HKS with Instrument panel / approach plate view with ATC COMS- Video by [email protected]
ILS 16 HKS with Instrument panel / approach plate view with ATC COMS - Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AApgkr3ybM0 I had a safety pilot with me who handled the camera. My normal camera for out the front was inop due to "user error" (failed to charge the battery) so views are much different...

ILS 16R at KRNO by nick name
The ILS 16R (http://tinyurl.com/353gd5) at Reno (KRNO) has the notation: "8500 to GS intercept 181 (2) and LOC (8.8)" I don't understand this. It appears this means that GS intercept will occur in 2 miles on a 181 heading and that LOC intercept will occur in 8.8 miles. Neither appears to be true...

ILS 18 Greenwood MS video by [email protected]
2 pilots, 1 student pilot, 2 cameras 1 plane = 9 minute video that I use the split screen feature of Windows Movie Maker where you can see on the left side outside the plane and the right side what the glide slope and ILS needles are doing. Pilot got his instrument ticket last month and this was...

ILS approach 16L inton KJAN - Video by [email protected]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaZ_yx_PvHM I kind of compiled it in what I hope is a user friendly format for the pilot that was with me so she can relate the ATC instructions to the 16L approach plate. She had never been in a Sundowner so you will hear me talk about the characteristics of a...

ILS approach and VOR Alpha Approach video by [email protected]
Knocked out a couple of approaches today in IMC conditions. Was cut short due to a vacuum system problem (note, not the pump). Ceilings 1500 at KJAN and 1400 on my approach into KMBO. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCvDb3mCAf8 Just after entering the clouds, saw my attitude indicator show...

ILS approach Greenville MS - Video by [email protected]
My flight to Greenville MS yesterday. ILS approach 18 left with 2100 foot ceilings and a visual back to Madison.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45Hdcs669Dg Interesting approach to say the least. Note the ground speed on final. 200 feet AGL winds were right off the nose at 35 knots which makes...

ILS approach into KHKS by [email protected]
Today's approach into KHKS. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJ-Hzig3RdM On launch celings were 600 and tops were 1700 solid OVC. By the time I got to HKS, ceilings were about 700 and broken. Just enough cloud coverage to justify an instrument rating as no VFR traffic was to be found but as easy...

ILS approach KJAN with ATC communications - Video by [email protected]
Under VMC conditions figure to knock out some approaches. As you can see from the ATC transmissions, it really does pay to make a face to face visit to your local controllers. It really does make it much more "personal" over the radio putting a face to a...

ILS approach to near minimums - Video by [email protected]
First time for me going down to near ILS minimums by myself. Video includes how I brief my IFR approaches. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCk_RRMemnM Video I think does a good job on demonstrating why the runway may not be always exactly in front of you after wind correction angle considerations...

ILS Critical Area signage: Localizer or Glideslope? by Adam K.
Hi, Does the ILS Critical Area sign apply to the localizer or the glideslope antenna? Or is this is a dumb question? CCR (Concord California) 19R has a localizer approach. No glideslope. It has an ILS Critical Area sign. I read recently that ILS equipped fields require the ILS critical area sign...
