ILS or LOC approach? by
Dan Wegman
I just noticed an approach to Frederick, MD (FDK) entitled "ILS OR LOC RWY
23". I thought every ILS could be flown as a non-precision LOC approach so
why not just call this one the "ILS RWY 23"?

Is there something specific that is disturbing, or are you referring to the

Pentrating Towering Cumulus Clouds by
O. Sami Saydjari
Thunderstorm season is up us. I get a little concerned when I see
towering cumulus clouds forming in my flight path because I know that
towering cumulus clouds can turn into thunderstorms.
1. Assuming that thunderstorms were not predicted for the area, is my
concern unjustified?
2. Do most...

cheapest in cockpit weather? by
dlevy
I used to have Cheap *******s software and a palm. While not perfect it was
much better than nothing.
Is there anything available now that is even remotely similar? I can't
justify thousands of dollars but I might be able to purchase some sort of
palm type thing if I can also use it for work. I...

Aircraft Winch by
Kobra
Flyers,
I finally had it with hangar rent increases and moved to a tie-down. So now
I have a Ramsey ATV2500 wireless remote winch for sale on ebay.com. It is
great for pulling a plane into the hangar. I used it for 1 1/2 years and it
really saved my back.
Here's the...

scheduling website by
Jim Burns
We've been using www.youcanbookit.com for scheduling our airplane. So far
it's been easy and worked great. The best part about it was it was a
free/commercial based site. Unfortunately the site has gone down and the
owner says it isn't likely to be put back online.
What web based scheduleing...

Flight planning software by
Cetacea
I know this subject has been discussed before, but not in awhile. I am
a current user of Destination Direct and Aeroplanner. While I really
like DD, I am very displeased with their updates. They don't even
support current TFR's over a planned route. Aeroplanner does allow
this, but I don't...

Heard on the air by
Roy Smith
Man, talk about ATC being nice to pilots. I was heading into Providence
(RI) earlier today. Weather was VFR, but there was just enough cloud
around that lots of instrument students were out chasing some benign IMC
time (that's what we were doing).
There's some guy who's obviously having trouble...

MOCA and MEA over water??? by
Roy Smith
V139 goes from southern NJ to eastern Long Island, cutting off the corner
of the coastline at New York, heading out about 40 miles over the ocean. I
just happened to notice that it's got MOCA's defined in addition to the
MEA's. The segment between MANTA and PLUME, for example, has a MOCA of
2000....

What confuses me is that all the pundit TV shows keep saying tonight is
that authorities have decided not to charge the pilots with a crime.
Are they shaving the distinction between "crime" and a "violation" very
closely. I can't imagine there wouldn't be administrative action
against these two...

IFR Alternate Requirement by

To my knowledge, in the US one must file an alternate IFR airport
regardless of the weather if the destination airport does not have an
IFR approach. Can someone please quote me the FAA regulation where
this is actually spelled out? Thanks!

Base reflectivity versus composite reflectivity by
Peter R.
Thanks to Rod Machado's article in May's _AOPA Pilot_, which was a
recap of another aviation safety enthusiast's lecture, I just learned
that there may be a big discrepancy in a storm's intensity when
comparing its base reflectivity (what is actually falling out of the
cloud) to its composite...

Any inside story re 430/530 WAAS cert.? by
[email protected]
This is from AvionicsWest:
"WAAS for the GNS430/530 is now postponed until sometime in 2006. I
don't "think" the problem is really a WAAS issue. You see,
Garmin plans on making the 430/530 comply with TSO 146 just as the
GNS480. TSO 146 requires an update rate of 5hz verses 1hz as the
product...

Precision instrument flying by
Matt Whiting
I was just reviewing the new Elmira One departure procedure. I think
the government has let GPS go to their heads. Unless I'm reading it
incorrectly, it specifies the initial heading out to TWO decimal places!
The procedure is pretty trivial as it basically says to fly runway
heading to 4000...

GPS Notams of outages by
