Dropping an bombs.....the f-bomb on frequency by G. Sylvester
I was inside the Final Approach fix into a local airport and just broke out 800 AGL, someone on frequency had their push-to-talk button keyed and it sounded like someone in the background dropped a bomb....an f-bomb ("....f**king..."). I'm pretty sure it was tower too. I replied on air, "Wow. ...

Decision time....go/no go by Fred Choate
Well, being newly certified, I of course get many requests from folks to take them up for a ride. I am glad to do so. This weekend I had scheduled a 1 hour flight around the Seattle area with two guys from work. Neither of them have ever been a small plane before, but both were excited to go,...

Stuck at work--need takeoff/landing distances for a 172 please by Yossarian
Excuse my laziness but if anyone feels like checking some distances for me I would be greatly appreciative ;) 172SP, fully loaded, 73' field elevation (Bermuda Dunes, CA), 120 degrees F, paved runway, assume no wind. I have a feeling the density altitude isn't going to make this feasible.

Experience Question by Fred Choate
Hello All.... This may sound silly, but I would like to hear some opinions on a matter presented to me this evening. I recently got my ticket. I started 5 years ago, and due to certain circumstances, I had to take 4 1/2 years off, then I picked up and did 10 more hours of training to prep for...

Gross Weight by Fred Choate
Here is a topic that was of discussion at work today: How much is too much over gross weight? For example.....the 172 has a gross weight of 2300 lbs, but what if you are 2345 at time of takeoff.....is that too much over, even if you are going to be burning enough fuel before your first scheduled...

Jay Honeck Ercoupe on a roof by [email protected]
Hey Jay! We found an Ercoupe mounted on the roof of a gas station in Wautoma, Wisconsin. I thought of you and your hotel immediately, of course. Maybe you could do something similar. I'll post photos I took of it on alt.binaries.pictures.aviation. Scott Wilson

Why bother about light aircraft noise. by [email protected]
I has looking at a TV show about traffic violations including the odd high speed chases. Part of the show was about the technical integerty of vehicles being pulled over. One of the things the police looked at was the sound level of cars and motorcycles, especially the ones with the sporty...

We are All Brits... by Jay Honeck
I'm a bit surprised that no one has brought up the horrible terrorist attacks on London. More importantly, I'm a bit worried that we haven't heard from any of our British pilot friends on this group, like Paul Sengupta, Steven Atherton, Chris Blythe, John Forster, and a host of others. You guys...

Flying a 172 with Autopilot? by VE5JL
Is there any one here flying a 172 using an autopilot? I think on longer flights (3+ hours) and autopilot would be an advantage, however there are some in the old school that think it is not necessary. I'd like some opinions. thx Joe

I'll be flying one of our 172's down to Santa Monica (KSMO) sometime in the next few weeks, probably this coming Friday (returning the following day). I'll be arriving from Oakland, stopping somewhere like Santa Maria or San Luis Obispo for lunch before arriving IFR into SMO with a couple of...

CFII instructor as passenger (FAA) by Robert M. Gary
Another interesting question is.. Can a CFI give instruction in a sea plane even though he only holds a private sea rating (assuming the CFI hold CFI-Airplane Single Engine) ? Back when my sea rating was only private I asked our local FSDO office. They said they could not find anything that said no...

Hello everybody: I am possibly going to move to Tampa, FL, and I was looking for flying clubs in the area. I visited the couple of airports in the area (vandenberg and Peter Knight) and asked about rental rates in the FBO, but I much rather join a flying club, rent from them, contribute to the...
