Flying through Canadian airspace by M
I'll take a few flights between Rochester, NY and the Detroit area this summer. Going through the Canadian airspace just seems so much shorter. I can go IFR. My questions is: * I don't need to deal with customs at all, as long as I don't stop at Canada, right? * Do I need to use the ICAO...

Aspen at night by Ron Garret
All the approach plates for Aspen are marked "Procedure not authorized at night" (presumably a result of the G4 crash a few years back). And yet there are commercial flights scheduled to land as Aspen at night. How do they do it? rg

Glaze Ice by brian whatcott
I did an Oxford instrument ground school long ago. One of the weather topics was glaze ice. This was described as extremely dangerous, in that supercooled rain could impact and flow to a glassy ice layer over the wing in seconds, which tended to pull the aircraft down pronto. In the last three...

Garmin 430 rquestion- does the approach always have to be activated via "activate approach"? by Terence Wilson
One annoyance of the 430 is that activating an approach will immediately set a course for the selected IAF (assuming RV not selected). What I would like to do is append the approach to my current flightplan so that I can transition en route to the approach without further programming. But I'm...

Transponder by Tom Cummings
My King KT-76A transponder has a stuck "Ident" button. It stuck when activated for ATC on the last flight and the button appears to have colapsed sideways underneath the cover panel. It is no longer visible in the opening now. ATC says the unit indicates an "Indent" signal presently. Does this...

More on Fuel Management - and an Ethical Dilemma by Greg Farris
In the June AOPA Pilot "State of General Aviation" issue, Bruce Landsberg gives a gold star to Cessna, for their new production singles, which, according to the article, have not suffered a single fuel mismanagement accident. Well, I know of one near-miss, which could have broken that record, and...

2 aircraft cleared onto the same runway at the same time by Tom Fleischman
This was a new one for me. I was IFR this afternoon out of HPN for short practice flight. I was in sequence number two at the runway waiting for departure. As the tower controller cleared the Cessna in front of me to position and hold, he asked him his direction of flight. The Cessna pilot...

Opinions please, preferred pattern joining methods by [email protected]
Consider you're NE of the airfield, non towered airport, runway 18/36, standard left pattern applies, with runway 36 the active. I'm interested in hearing what your personal method of joining the pattern would be, while adhering to the FAR's and AIM. I've two thoughts: Fly south, then west, pass...

How do you leave this airport IMC? by Journeyman
On the way to Pinckneyville last weekend, I stopped at Jimmy Stewart Field, Indiana, PA. KIDI. I had to shoot the GPS 28 approach with a cirle to land 10. There's a nice transition off the Revloc VOR. Since we had a late start, we had planned to stop there for the night, but by the time we left...

Completing the Non-precision approach as a Visual Approach by John Clonts
I'm inbound on the final approach segment of the VOR-A approach at T82 (Fredericksburg Texas): http://www.myairplane.com/databases/approach/SouthCentral/T82_vd_gA.pdf At about 3 miles east of the airport I'm at the MDA of 2460 MSL ("766 AGL"), mostly in a 700 foot overcast. Through a break in...

Are "Popups" A Hassle? by skym
For the ATC guys: I frequently have departed VFR, but then do a popup if needed. Frequently these are sortof foreseeable possibilities, but often enough I have been able to proceed VFR all the way. I've often wondered just how much of a hassle it is to ATC to have to deal with a popup.

Are handheld GPSes becoming a defacto primary nav source? by Paul Tomblin
This week I did several IFR flights, some in IMC and most in VMC. On a couple of those flights, ATC offered me direct to the next VOR after the one I was navigating to, well before I could actually pick up the signal. One time departing Rochester, they told me to go direct Elmira when I was less...

How wide is an NDB approach course? by Jose
What is the protected area under an NDB approach course? Since the course guidance is cruder than an ILS, I'd expect it would be wider, but how much wider? I ask also in the context of when I should consider myself "established" on course (for purposes of descent). Jose -- He who laughs,...

FAA Control tower Abandoned by Blowinginthewind
Looks like this is becoming a common occurrence lately. Oh I forgot, the FAA treats their controller and technical workforce like ****. Maybe that's it. FAA Control tower Abandoned Southwest Planes Turn Around Minutes From Green Southwest Says Planes Could Not Land Without Air Traffic Control

Commercial certificate question by Matt Whiting
I think I know the answer to this, but would like a second opinion. Does FAR 61.129 (a)(3) (iii) and (iv) really require an instructor ride along on these two long VFR flights? I have over 600 hours TT and an instrument rating and plan to obtain my commercial certificate. however, in reviewing my...

Does an IPC count as a BFR? by Larry Jenkins
Okay, I've read the regulations and still can't figure out the answer to this question: If I received an IPC from a CFII one year after my last BFR, do I need to get another BFR in 12 months or 24 months from now?? Thanks in advance, Larry

First IFR flight after checkride by Wizard of Draws
August 22, 2004 12:30 2.2 hrs. (.4 actual) First flight after my IFR checkride, with actual! For one of the few times in my brief aviation journey, I had a plane reserved and hoped for cloudy skies. Not the towering, throw-down-fire-from-the-heavens kind of clouds, but a benign overcast that I...

An airline pilot of my acquaintance related about accepting a charted visual flight procedure into Reno, part of which involves intercepting a localizer course. He said they were IMC at the time. My understanding is that the aircraft must reporting seeing a landmark or preceding aircraft before...

You are in IMC, when *everything* fails! Now what? by Thomas Pappano
Hello All, There has been much discussion here about the obvious benefits of redundant systems, engines, vacuum, electrical etc., when flying in IMC. We've also read NTSB reports of crashes of very well equipped planes where the pilot did not make use of redundant instruments. As for myself and...
