Gravel as opposed to aspalt runway by
Jay Honeck
I am looking at a plane. It is at a private gravel airstrip. I usually
fly off aspalt runways.. Would flying off a gravel strip hurt the plane
landing gear, etc as opposed to aphalt runways?
Check the paint -- if there's any left -- on the under-side of the elevator.
That'll tell the...

Low compresion 500 hour Cylinder outcome by
A Lieberma
Well, it had to be pulled and sent to the shop for overhaul. A&P thinks
the valve guides need redone (calibrated?).
Took 'er up around the pattern to see if the compressions would come up
from a hard run, and for the first 4 take offs and landings, engine
performed wonderfully. 35 minutes...

It sure would be nice not depending on a single powerplant.
Are two 40 hp engines unable to do the work of a 80hp?
The question is will the aircraft fly...

C172 Air vents by
Matt Young
Our club owns a 1978 172. The little tabs that hold the pilots side air
vent in the tube have come out and been lost, so when you get up to
speed, it just pops out (makes the right seat nice adn cool this time of
year, but will be a problem in winter). Any ideas on easy fixes or
finding the...

How long to get down question by
David Lesher
An OT query for folks here. While discussing things that can happen
between the jetways, I posited that it's a really bad to be aloft
in Big Iron in a medical emergency, etc. -- based on how long it
takes to get on the ground.
That brings up the question of how long that time really is....

finally go fly and now we freeze (172 air leaks) by
Mike Z.
My 172 M has some pretty big air leaks from behind the plastic pieces at the top of the windshield. It is coming from behind the
trim piece that encircles the vents and drops down the doorpost.
I don't see any point in caulking. It would just move the problem.
It ain't gonna get any warmer for a...

Plug fouled by

Well, having to do a bunch of cross country flying moving grandchildren
around, 20 hours over two weeks, means I had to put in 100LL at
whatever backwater airport I happened to be at, instead of the cheap
nasty mogas I usually burn... Of course, starting up on a remote
airstrip mean't finding a...

Late Winter in Michigan by
Roger[_4_]
Well, I finally made it out to the airport (3BS) today.
With the 4-Runner in 4WD I managed to get within about 10 feet of the
man door. That's where those big tires dropped through the ice and
snow to the sod underneath. sigh at least the ground is still
frozen but I think we may be missing a...

Doesn't AOPA know the value of a good pre-buy? by

See attached link about the Twin Comanche they are giving away.
Sounds like the engines were toast when they bought the plane. I know
they plan on replacing/overhauling the engines, but this kind of stuff
is indicative of a REALLY bad condition...

Electric whine in the light circuit - Help by
Victor J. Osborne, Jr.
I flew my (new to me) '87 A36 Bonanza at night for the first time recently
and discovered a whine when the panel lights where turned on. The flood
light switch / circuit doesn't do it and the rheostat for the panel light
dimmer changes the frequency.
Where do I start with the troubleshooting? I...
