IFR student: circling approach struggles by
xyzzy
All through my primary training I learned never to turn more than 30
degree bank in the pattern, and keep that ball centered. For four
years and about 230 hours I've flown by that doctrine.
Now I'm doing instrument and on circling approaches I'm learning that to
keep it close enough in on...

Intersting tidbit about the Miami seaplane crash and fuel reserves by
xyzzy
from: http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/12/19/miami.crash.ap/
"One of its airplanes was hijacked to Cuba in 1974. Since then, the
company has had a policy of not carrying enough fuel to reach Havana."
Now Havana is not that far from Miami. I have a hard time believing
they would be within legal IFR (or...

GPS missed approach question by
xyzzy
You're supposed to go missed if you have a RAIM or GPS failure message.
But all the GPS IAP's I've seen have missed approaches that require
use of the GPS to fly correctly (fly to this waypoint, then go to this
other waypoint and hold). So what do you do? Use the GPS to fly the
missed despite the...

Flying through the Atlantic Seaboard by
xyzzy
I am considering taking a flight from central North Carolina to Cape
Cod in late March of this year. Up until all of my flying has been in
the Southeast, with IAD being as far north as I've ventured.
Playing with the AOPA planner the route looks pretty interesting -- go
just east of the DC ADIZ,...

ILS vs circle to land by
Yossarian
Recently I flew a 172 to SBA. ILS 7 was in use, wind 250 at 7. The
runway is quite long so I wasn't concerned about the tailwind.
However, if I had been concerned about the wind direction, is it best
to ask the approach controller for a different runway? Or would the
tower deal with it? I...

KAP 140 autopilot approach by
Yossarian
I'm trying to figure out the right way to use the AP for an ILS. The
manual isn't clear on this situation. Assume that I have a vector to
intercept the localizer and have been cleared for the approach. Let's
say that the intercept angle is less than 45 degrees.
I'm starting in HDG & ALT hold...

Missed approach (?) when glideslope fails by
Yossarian
You are on an ILS approach, DH 200'. The localizer-only MDA is 500'.
You are at 300' in IMC when the GS fails. Assuming you are timing the
approach, is it legal to climb to 500 and continue the approach?

How to file for practice appch at a military base? by
Yossarian
I'm planning my 250 nm XC for my instrument rating and would like to do a
PAR approach at Pt. Mugu naval airfield (NTD) in CA on my way back from San
Luis Obispo. How would I file that? I will be coming down V25, should I
expect the IAF to be VTU? Is there any way to indicate in the flight...

Thoughts on this approach? by
Yossarian
Saturday was my first night IFR cross country. I was flying right seat in
a 172SP with an instructor on the left. The flight was from KHHR Hawthorne
CA to Bermuda Dunes. All was well and as expected until Palm Springs
approach. They vectored us to a point south of the VOR-C approach approx...

Holding pattern reporting by
Yossarian
At what point do you report holding to ATC? Upon reaching the holding fix,
or when you are established in the hold and again crossing the fix? For
example, your direction of flight makes a parallel entry appropriate. You
cross the fix and turn outbound. Should you report then or wait till...
