"Airport Hot Spot" Superscript Numbers by blackboxman
I just noticed something new on the airport diagram for Paine Field: airport hot spots. Anybody know what the superscript number after each "HOT" designator is for? Thanks. Ethan

"Are you worried about all those non-green colors on the radar?" by Peter R.
I actually received this comment today from an FSS (US Flight service) specialist when I called for an IFR flight briefing for a flight from Boston back to Syracuse, NY, early this afternoon. The Bridgeport FSS specialist was not joking either. He went on to say that too often pilots express...

Yesterday's "Fantasy" IFR flight from Bessemer AL back home to Madison MS. KMBO. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GMej00GrhE Cumulus cloud bases were 5000 estimated to 8000 feet. My cruise altitude was 6000. One has to admit, the view at 6000 was more photogenic then Interstate 20 and...

"Rolling" to ATC by Mxsmanic
Under what conditions, if any, would you explicitly tell ATC that you are rolling, that is, actually rolling on the runway for take-off? I hear this used occasionally, but I don't know if there are any formal circumstances that merit it, or if it is just at pilot discretion, or what. It is...

"Tombstone" agency splitting hairs again by BillyJack
A close call between two planes at O'Hare Airport this summer was closer than originally reported. The National Transportation Safety Board said Tuesday that an Atlas Air cargo plane and a United Airlines jet came within 35 feet of colliding on July 23 -- not 300 feet as reported back in July...

"View Limiting Device" recommendations please by [email protected]
I've been working on that elusive instrument rating for awhile now, but I still haven't come up with a very good solution for my view limiting device. I need to wear glasses for reading (charts), but otherwise I see just fine. I wear progressive lenses (for presbyopia) that vary from a diopter of...

10 hrs. Instrument for Commercial by Geo. Anderson
Just started looking at ASE requirements. I don't have to get _another_ 10 hours if I am already IA rated, right? Previous instrument training time has to apply here. ? FAR 61.129(a)3(i) Thanks.

12 horsepower per hour per gallon, equates to percent power by Doug
Rule of thumb. So if you are burning 10 gallons an hour in a 180 hp engine, you are developing (10x12) = 120 hp. 120/180 = .67, so that is 67% power. It's not exact but gets you close.
