Pre-buy inspections by
Paul Folbrecht
I am now getting close to the point where I will be seriously in the
market for an aircraft- most likely a C150 or 152.
I know that I'd be a fool to buy any airplane that I haven't had
inspected by a qualified A&P that is not, of course, affiliated with the
seller. But, let's say I travel a fair...

Stupid question about autogas by
Paul Folbrecht
If I buy a 152 getting the autogas STC appeals to me a lot for the
obvious reason (economy).
What I'm wondering about is exactly how the pilots that are running
autogas are getting it to the airport. I can't imagine the typical
answer is much different than "carting it there in cans" but even a...

looking for design guidelines for a flying school by
Sierra
I'm currently working on a design of a new controlled domestic aerodrome.
The runway is supposed to comply with ICAO code 3C specs. Aircraft like
Fokker F27 Series, Fokker F28, BAe.146 Series, Dash 8 and Dornier 288s could
be operated.
The primary purpose of the airport is for domestic passenger...

How scary is gasohol? by
Charles Talleyrand
My auto-fuel-stc says very clearly that one cannot use gasoline with
any type of alcohol in it. I understand that beyond the reg itself, the
main reason is that fuel lines can swell if they come into contact with
alcohol cutting of the flow of fuel to the engine.
I'm going to obey the reg...

S-TEC 60-2 audio warning by
Julian Scarfe
I'm confused. I've spent many years flying a Mooney with a KFC200 autopilot
that has an audible disconnect warning. We now have a Twin Comanche in
which we installed an STEC 60-2 a couple of years ago.
Recently, testing the 60-2 pre-flight, I noticed that there was no audio
warning when the...

Vertical card compasses by
Dan Luke
If you have one, how do you like it? Do you ever notice that it does not
return to the same indication when the airplane returns to the same
heading (hysteresis error)? IOW, if you turn from 090 to 180 and back to
090 according to the HI, would your VCC come all the way back to 090, or
would it...

Color of spark plugs by
john smith
We just did the annual on our 1945 Aeronca Champ.
Took the plugs out to do the compression test.
On inspecting them, noted that they were black, sootie.
The AI said that is normal for autogas in a Champ.
Honeck always says his plugs are clean when he runs autogas.
Is this the difference beween...

New Overhead Vents for Early Archer by
Bob Chilcoat
As a followup to my earlier post about replacement overhead vents for our
Archer. See what I did with the plastic eyeball vents I found. They look
great. I posted pictures on alt.binaries.aviation.pictures under the same
title.

Simple weight/balance question by
Frode Berg
Hi!
I am part owner of an Arrow 180 hp.
We haven't had a weight and balance done in a while, and I was wondering one
thing.
It seems on the old numbers that me and my wife cannot ride in the front
seat together when fully fueled....
I weigh in at around 100 kg (approx 220 lbs) and wife is around...

Withstanding Peak Temperatures by
O. Sami Saydjari
OK. I have a basic question. Why is running an engine at peak
temperature (as in Rich-of-Peak operation) not good for the engine? In
the scheme of things 50-100 degress cooler than peak temperature (where
many folks recommend the engine be run) does not seem significantly
lower in temperature...

S-TEC 60-2 requires re-trim after altitude hold? by
Peter R.
Speaking of the S-Tec 60-2, I am transitioning to a Bonanza V35B that is
equipped with this AP. The previous owner demonstrated an idiosyncrasy
with the AP that I would like to correct, if possible.
Using the AP to hold VSI, the aircraft is in a climb. Upon reaching the
assigned altitude, I push...

Burning out a Magneto Drop by
O. Sami Saydjari
I just received a booklet from TCM called "Tips on Engine Care" (a very
good book...available from TCM's website...http://www.tcmlink.com/). On
page 12 it says "Never but never attempt to "burn out" a magneto drop
with ground run-up. This 'time-honored' procedure succeeds only at the
expense of...

Oil Analysis Results Question by
Michael 182
TIO-540 in '79 TR182. I had a top overhaul 68 hours ago. Changed out the
mineral oil at 18 hours and just changed the 15-50 oil at 50 hours. Chromium
is 30.4. I suspect that new cylinders will cause a higher than normal
Chromium for a while, but is this unusally high?
Thanks,
Michael
