The bombs in Spain go off mainly on the train by
Denyav
How luckily for Bush and Asnar that this newest atrocity will,
almost certainly, propel the Spaniards to close the ranks around
the government. The timing is especially apt; a week more for
voters to think over the news, and they might get the idea that
Asnar pins the bomings on ETA...

B-52 crew blamed for friendly fire death by
Paul Hirose
On June 22 last year, during close air support training in Djibouti, a
B-52H flying out of Diego Garcia accidentally attacked the observation
post controlling the bomber. Nine M117 750-lb unguided bombs killed
one U.S. Marine and wounded seven Marines and a sailor. Both parked
CH-53E helicopters...

B-17 forward guin positions by
zxcv
It looks to me like the B-17 had more forward guns than people to fire them.
According to my count there were two men in the forward compartment
(bombadier and navigator).
Looking at pictures of the B-17F Memphis Belle I see four guns, each in a
separate loophole in the nose of the plane.
Looking...

B-17s at Low Level by
WalterM140
Hi,
I am building a diorama with a 1/48th scale B-17 at low altitude. It will have
two engines turning and two shut down.
My question is, would a B-17 have its landing flaps deployed at all at this
lower speed and altitude if it was not landing, just hedge-hopping home? And
if so, how...

unfriendly friendlies by
David Windhorst
What are some early examples of an air force facing hostile a/c
originally produced by its own country's aviation industry (whether they
were sold to a former friendly nation that then became an enemy, or were
captured a/c, or whatever)? The first case I can remember reading about
is during the...

request for ideas on decoding jet jock slang by
Jeff Crowell
Hi, guys.
An acquaintance has asked me to help decode a bit of
Navy pilot jargon his daughter heard at a Poli Sci lecture.
The prof is a former Tomcat pilot, and was apparently
regaling the class with Tomcat tales. He used the
acronym "SBFAFP" (spelled out, not spoken as a word
as Navy types are...

High-altitude autorotations? by
Bill McClain
Not terribly military, I know, but...the local TV channel's news
helicopter (a Bell Jet Ranger) and its pilot appeared in a commercial
in which the stated ceiling was 22,000 feet. I remarked to my
aircraftwise 8-year-old, "Twenty-two thousand feet? I wouldn't do
that!" When Joshua asked why, I...
