TFR Penalty by
Magellan
Does anyone know what the penalty is for busting a Presidential TFR?
I've talked with a controller and AOPA and their opinions are pretty
varied...Don't ask why I want to know this, it's embarassing!

How does a Prop Governor work? by
Felix
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone can explain exactly how a prop governor
works for a constant speed prop system? All I know is that the engine
Oil pushes a piston in the prop hub that twists the prop to the
appropriate angle.
Thanks,
Felix

Pirep: Garmin GPSMAP 296 versus 295. (very long) by
Jon Woellhaf
I got my first GPS, a Magellan, in April of 1995. I thought it was an
absolute marvel - and it was, at the time. I got my second GPS, a Garmin GPS
III Pilot, in November of 1997, for about $650. It was a hundred times
better than the Magellan. I got my third GPS, a Garmin GPSMAP 295, in
February of...

Aviation club for children? by
Richard Thomas
Whenever I can, when I go flying I take my 5 year old daughter with
me. She really likes to fly and is quite interested so I was wondering
if there were some kind of club she could join (kind-of AOPA jr) or,
if not, whether there would be any interest in one if one were
started. I was thinking...

Portable XM Radio receiver in the cockpit? by
Peter R.
I have made the jump to satellite radio for my car, choosing XM Radio as
my provider. Wow, am I in love now that I am free of the canned format
of commercial radio! :)
I was wondering if anyone has taken the portable version of the XM radio
receiver, in my case called the Delphi Roadie or Roadie...

IFR to Chandler AZ (Phoenix area) by
S. Sherman
Hello,
I'm relatively new to IFR (got the rating in Jan.) and also have never
flown into the Arizona area.
I'll be flying from the San Diego area into Chandler (CHD) and I want
to do the flight IFR. I have some questions:
1. Does ATC normally route you to CHD using one of the PHX STARs? I
did...

First Solo In Actual Conditions by
David B. Cole
On Saturday I had my first opportunity to fly solo in actual since my
IR checkride. One of my biggest concerns since getting the rating was
how I would make my first entry into actual without the benefit of an
instructor at my side. With about ten hours of actual during my
training I had always...

Run In With Mr. Edwards by
Jay Honeck
After living in Iowa for the last 7 years, it seemed that we were the only
ones left who had NOT been to the "Great Iowa State Fair." This year is
the 150th anniversary of this grand old tradition, so last weekend we
decided to check it out.
After the brief, 0.7 hour flight to Des Moines, Mary...

Reduce RPM to "coast" in long descent? by

Answer to this question isn't in the flight manual for my '53 Cessna

I am planning a long flight Labor Day Weekend and calculate no wind
reserve based on my previous fuel burn rate of about 50 minutes. Book
says even more.
My last leg will be about 170 N mile...

Does cruise altitude matter? by
Ben Jackson
For a non-turbocharged piston airplane, does cruise altitude really
matter? I made a complicated spreadsheet which produces a fairly simple
answer: Unless you climb way above your critical altitude, trip time
and fuel burn don't vary much at all. Over a 500nm trip, it only takes
about 4% longer...

Getting unlost (was Training Q - Is this appropriate) by

Alan-
I totally agree with you, even to a larger scale. Instructors as of late

radio navigation. I think its a shame. Basic pilotage is so essential...

Pilots and driving by
Andrew Sarangan
I remember a discussion recently whether pilots are safer drivers. I
believed that to be true until recently. As a pilot, I tend to look up at
the sky while driving, particularly if an airplane is flying. The other day
I was looking up at the clouds to figure out which direction the wind...
