Instrument Approaches and procedure turns.... by
Cecil E. Chapman
I'm reviewing the approach plates for my Instrument lesson this coming
Thursday (which I just realized is September 11, of all things..). I've
found it useful to 'practice' approaches using OnTop flight sim before my
lessons, seems to give me more 'bang for the buck'.
Anyway (I'm sorry, in...

RNAV approaches by
Kevin Chandler
I fly a couple of planes which have RNAV equipment installed. I feel very
comfortable using the equipment for the enroute portion of the flight. I
wanted to start flying some RNAV approaches. The closest airport with an
RNAV approach is Connersville, In (CEV). It is the new style RNAV...

Alternate requirements by
Anthony Chambers
I've spent the past couple of hours researching this in the regs and
newsgroups... and am still a little confused
If I require an alternate airport for a IFR Flight plan, does that alternate
have to have official weather reporting? I read somewhere that:
"The requirements for an airport to...

Second Stage Climb Gradient? by
Bill
I was told by a co-worker that a new Part 91-mandatory compliance reg
has come out, requiring all airplanes to meet a min. climb gradient of
2.5% for second stage climb gradient, unless published otherwise. In
other words, if no specific gradient is published for XYZ airport,
then the airplane must...

Why some approaches are NA as alternates by
Ben Jackson
What is the reason for an approach (or a whole airport) to be NA as
an alternate? Is there some attribute an approach has to have to be
worthy of being filed as an alternate?
The one that got me wondering was KAST (Astoria, OR) which is NA except
for the VOR Rwy 8 when it also has ILS/LOC and GPS...

Are handheld GPSes becoming a defacto primary nav source? by
Paul Tomblin
This week I did several IFR flights, some in IMC and most in VMC. On a
couple of those flights, ATC offered me direct to the next VOR after the
one I was navigating to, well before I could actually pick up the signal.
One time departing Rochester, they told me to go direct Elmira when I was
less...
