Aspen EFD1000 by [email protected]
I got the information from Aspen Avioncs that the ARINC429 interface of the KLN900 cannot be used by the EFD1000. Does anyone has an idea why? is it a technical problem or a certification problem? EFD1000 can the Garmin ARINC. The EFD1000 has an internal AHRS which provides attitude +...

Aspen ODP question by [email protected]
I have a question about the ceiling and visibility minima as alternates for climb gradients in departure procedures. A good example is at Aspen (KASE), straight out of the FAA Instrument Procedures Handbook, but they don't explain the portion I find difficult to understand. I've duplicated the...

ASR Approach - Doing the Controller a Favor by [email protected]
I was asked if I would accept an ASR approach into a satellite airport for controller training. I said, sure no problem. I got a wide vector that put me on a 15 mile final. The controller gave me a "10 miles from airport, complete pre-landing checklist". I've never heard that one before - it...

ASR approach KJAN - Video by [email protected]
ASR approach into KJAN with ATC communications. One thing for sure, every flight is different! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dV3GyaK7jOE Watch how I handle a "non issuance" of a landing clearance. You will hear me vocalizing my "thoughts" on flying the plane and what I am doing to "correct"...

Asymmetrical thurst by Jim Carter[_1_]
Watching the videos of the heavies crabbing to a landing in high cross winds prompts me to ask: why don't they use asymmetrical thrust instead of kicking it straight in the flare? Even in a single, why don't we see more forward slips to a landing instead of crab, kick, and pray? Have these...

ATC "cancellation" of scheduled carrier flights? by Marc J. Zeitlin
While discussing reimbursement of hotel bills from a major airline, I was told that my flight(s) were cancelled BY ATC. Now, I know that ATC can delay IFR clearances/takeoffs based on weather, traffic volume, landing slots at the destination, and probably cosmic ray intensity as well, but I...

ATC Altimeter Settings by O. Sami Saydjari
When entering an ATC region, we often get an altimeter setting, usually at some fix. So for example, when entering the Chicago center ATC region, they say something like, "Midway altimeter is xx.xx." I have some questions. 1. So, do they pick some fix for the region and give everyone...

ATC Careers -- Question for Newps or Chip by Tom Sixkiller
My youngest daughter is graduating high school this May, and is looking to do a GWBush by joining the Air National Guard. The job she's most interested in is Air Traffic Controller. She's also contemplating doing AFROTC at the same time (don't think she can do ROTC while being in ANG). I _assume_...

ATC question about helicopter routes by [email protected]
I've been flying on helicopetr routes over NYC for years now with terrific controllers everywhere but got hung up with a controller last week and I need help understanding his arguments for refusing me access. He said I'm not a helicopter so I cannot fly a helicopter route when it 'may' interfere...

ATC says wrong position by Greg Esres
When being vectored, and ATC says your 4 miles from X, I noticed occasionally that they state the wrong X. They confuse the FAF with the IF. For this reason, I tell students to never rely on ATC's distance statements to make a descent. How often do others see this?
