First Post: Hello! by
Tobeon
Just a first post to say Hello!
I just found this whole news group thing and was very happy to find a
soaring newsgroup
(though I haven't been gliding for several months due to school and huge
lack of funds! No!)
which is very bad as I just went solo and then couldn't go. I must save up
some...

New EU Subsidy rules good for Gliding? by
Stephen Haley
Have just seen on the news that the EU is changing the farming subsidy rules
from next year, to try and reduce the food mountain I would guess. Now they
are going to pay the subsidy regardless of the farmer actually growing
anything with the subsidy being based on an average of x past years...

Cutting plasma rope by
Robert Makin
There is considerable interest in the UK in using
plasma/dyneema rope for winch launching. However,
the main obstacle appears to be finding an efficient
method of cutting the rope in event of an emergency.
Has anyone ot there found the definitive method???

Winch Way Is Up !! by
Craig Freeman
It's intriguing how much attention any post about winch launching seems to
generate here on RAS. I must admit I, like most here in the USA, cried
"foul" or was it"fool" any time one would suggest that winching could be
a viable alternative to the much perferred aero tow. Shame on me. Perhaps
it's...

elevator /pitch control by
John Firth
There was a story in S&G some years ago about a ASW 20 sucessfully landed
without damage by use of flap changes; the pilot had read the manual.
Following the fatal crash of a Cessna 150/150 hp two plane, due to
a burned throughj elevator cable, two of us tow pilots experimented
with pitch trim on...

Newbie question by
Bill Gribble
Completely daft newbie question that I'm hoping will have a simple
answer.
Mention is frequently made of the term L/D, which I know is an
abbreviation of Lift / Drag. For example, the L/D cited in an advert for
a Ka6 recently was "L/d 33"
If L/D is the Lift/Drag ratio, why are the figures...

Vans RV-G glider by
Mark James Boyd
Hmmm....
I was wondering if metal gliders have an L/D disadvantage
due to the metal, or because of the lousy rivets and
poor wing airfoil and draggy struts (of the SGS gliders,
for example).
Is it possible to make a retract gear metal glider with
flush rivets and a carry-through spar which would...

What next? by
ISoar
I'm scheduled to Solo this weekend (yipeee!) and am thinking about
whats next. Plan was to train at a FBO then join a club. Question is
when to transition? I know theres going to be more lessons before I
take the FAA license test. FBO advantage is familiar aircraft,
airfield, soaring conditions,...

Puchacz life extension by
Janusz Kesik
Looking at the Windpath Corporation's website www.windpath.ca] I have =
found a technical AD regarding the Puchacz's life extension over =
6000hrs. It seems that now it's 6750hrs, and (if I have understood it =
properly) can be made even longer by overhauling glider every next =
1000hrs.
There's...
