Snow... by
Dan Luke
....it's hard to see through, and good ol' Gulf Coast home boys like me should
not mess around with it.
Christmas Eve I was flying my daughter and grandson to Houston to visit my
mom for the holiday. We'd spent the previous day in a little town NE of
Houston. It was only about a 45 nm flight...

Burning out the pitot heat? by
Mitty
Hangar flying today, one high-time CFII, MEI, etc. expressed concern with
leaving the pitot heat on in warmer weather. Says he wants the heat in clouds
so the pitot doesn't fill up with mist/moisture/water but he turns it off in the
clear for fear of burning it out.
I've never heard or read about...

MS flight simulator 2004 by
Matt Whiting
Santa delivered Flight Simulator and a Cyborg joystick this year. I
plan to use it to help maintain instrument currency when I don't have
time for the real thing. I'm finding the learning curve for FS to be a
little steep initially and it is taking a while to get things like the
joystick...

IFR ticket vs. professional training (MD, PhD...) by
G. Sylvester
I got into a discussion with an non-pilot MD comparing
a professional degree versus flying.
My background, BS and MS from the top 2 bioengineering programs
in the US. (note, I put *much* more weight to experience over letters
after a name including my own). Flying-wise, I have a PPL and

backup cockpit lighting by
Josef Burger
What do you use for extra and backup lighting in the cockpit for IFR
flights at night? Some airplanes have pretty decent lighting built in.
Others can have decent cockpit lighting and poor panel lighting.
Others have shadows in poor locations, or areas of the panel/cockpit
you'd really like to...

AWOS by
[email protected]
A friend of mine just gave me a toll free number to obtain AWOS at any
airport.
Just call +1 (877) 269-2967, and key in the airport identifier when
requested.
It requires listening to a commercial, but it's a quick and easy way
to get an AWOS report.

Prepping for IR checkride - questions by
Paul Folbrecht
Hello all,
I've made the appointment for my IR checkride, although it's still a
ways out, and had a couple things on my mind.
1) Concerning the heading standards (+- 10 degrees, of course), I find
that I still, at this point, _occasionally_ exceed them, _especially_ in
prepping for an approach...

removed the MX300 and VOR indicator.
Replaced it with a Garmin 480.
If you know someone who needs a radio and VOR indicator let me know.

Don't always believe the AWOS... by
Steven Barnes
I got my IR last August and finally got to log my 1st post-checkride actual
approach. All while the airport I was landing at was reporting 10 miles and
clear below 12,000. More like 1,200. All day long this place was reporting
clear skies. All day long it varied between 1,200 and 1,700.
ATC read...

What causes the BANG when an airliner lifts off? by
G Farris
I've flown a lot of planes, of different sizes, and I always lift off gently.
When I fly as a passenger on an airliner though, there is a "thud" or even a
"bang" as the main wheels leave the runway. Sometimes this bang is so loud is
frightens passengers, and once it was strong enough (on a 777...

RNP .3 Without GPS by
[email protected]
Most RNAV approaches have the notations:
"GPS or RNP - 0.3 required", and
"DME/DME RNP - 0.3 not authorized"
1. The "or RNP .3" seems to imply some navigation unit other than gps
can have rnp .3 Any idea what?
2. If an FMS with rnp .3 is able to conduct this approach, wouldn't
it need a gps...
