More info on GNS 430/530 WAAS upgrade by
PPT33R
I recently made an inquiry to Garmin regarding their new requirement
that GNS 430/530 owners pre-order the WAAS upgrade prior to November
2005 to guarantee the $1500 price their marketing department has been
stating for the past 2 years...
Keeping in mind the WAAS upgrade for these boxes are...

Implications of.....keeping the speed up by
[email protected]
So let's say I'm inbound to Teterboro from the west, doing 250 kias
below 10,000 in descent. Atc gives me a radar vector, and clears me
to maintain 4000 feet.
1, Do I need to slow to 200 kias at some time?
2. I'm considering that I may well be less than 3000 feet AGL (or is
2500 the magic...

Precip types based on return by

If you look at the radar plots at NOAA's site here
http://radar.weather.gov/radar_lite.php?product=NCR&loop=no&rid=cxx
there is no prediction for precip type, just the value of reflectivity
is given.

ILS sans identification by
[email protected]
Anyone have a reference for a requirement to identify an ils or vor
prior to it's use in the USA?
Secondly, is there any reference to the type of identification
required? For example, would checking that the primary flight display
is displaying the correct identifier suffice? Or is there...

Dreaming STARS by
[email protected]
Was I dreaming? Or did I once hear that RNP 1 and 2 stars/sids had
been published in the USA? I see type A and B, but these are RNAV,
and so must have no RNP requirement whatsoever, and can be flown by
any /G aircraft. Anyone provide some info?

Chief Counsel rulings.... by
[email protected]
Anyone know where to view ruling by the FAA's chief counsel? In
particular, I'm looking for the one that that states "departure
procedures" referred to in Far 91.129(g) are only those traffic
pattern departure routes that the FAA sometimes establishes for a
particular airport. As opposed to say...

Dept procedures stumper questions by
[email protected]
Here's some items to liven up the group...
1. Suppose your departure clearance includes "cross X vor at or above
5000, Y vor at or above 10,000, maintain 15,0000 feet." Once airborne
you're given "maintain FL200". Do the altitude restrictions at X and
Y vor's still apply?
2. Now suppose...

Duats route filing - need help via radials by
[email protected]
I've been trying to use duats to file flight plans. The preferred
route from PHL to Toronto CYYZ is ptw, then ptw 320 deg radial to
intercept J64 RAV etc. I've tried various formats to enter this
radial to a jet route format, but duats doesn't seem to accept it.
Any one able to make this type of...

Alternate minimums same as forecast weather by
[email protected]
Does anyone consider it somewhat dangerous that at your alternate
airport, the weather can be forecast to be as low as your alternate
minimums? Seems the potential for problems.
For example, using Carlsad California CRQ as the planned alternate,
where the VOR-A is the approach you plan to fly...

Requirement to fly Departure Procedures by
[email protected]
The word on the street seems to be that with a departure clearance
from an uncontrolled airfield of "cleared on course" any ODP would not
need to be flown in VMC. . However, I'm not sure how the FAR quote
below, which also applies to Class C and B airspace, supports that.
Clearly, an ODP is...

Continuing past the MAP, KSUN, Hailey Idaho by
[email protected]
Opinions please:
Hailey Idaho, KSUN, daytime, ndb dme approach (circling only minima),
map is 5.3 nm back from threshhold, minima are 8000 ft (2681) and 5
miles, with "fly visual to airport" annotation.
1. Since 5.3 nm is just over 6 sm, is this not contrary to the FAR's,
in that you can fly...

RNP .3 Without GPS by
[email protected]
Most RNAV approaches have the notations:
"GPS or RNP - 0.3 required", and
"DME/DME RNP - 0.3 not authorized"
1. The "or RNP .3" seems to imply some navigation unit other than gps
can have rnp .3 Any idea what?
2. If an FMS with rnp .3 is able to conduct this approach, wouldn't
it need a gps...

required vertical altitude separation by
[email protected]
Is 1000 feet the absolute minimum vertical separation between ifr
aircraft? Or can atc assign 3500 feet to one, and 4000 to another,
and have no lateral separation??
Secondly, any different for a situation where one is ifr at 4000 ft,
and a vfr aircraft is being vectored at 3500 feet, with no...

Talking to departure control by

I'm not from the US, but just wondering if you depart ifr from an
airport and tower tells you to contact departure, I know that you
check in with callsign, altitude through, and cleared altitude.
But I was wondering if the AIM recommends anywhere also to include the
departure runway and the...
