are "counter-rotating" and "contra-rotating" interchangeable terms? by
buttman
I'm doing some research, trying to find information on airplanes with
counter-rotating props, but I'm getting a lot of junk hits from
articles that use "counter-rotating" when they should mean
"contra-rotating".
I was always taught that "contra-rotating" was when you had two sets of
blades...

angle of approach or landing range question by
Tim923
I don't have an aviation background. What is the typical angle of
landing/approach for commercial airliners? There's an illusion for
novices, and it seems like the angle is much greater, even 30 degrees
or more, but I remember hearing it is much less, like under 10. At
what angle would the...

$100 hamburger radius by
Stubby
2 McD selections at $4 each plus 2 "drinks" at $1 each leaves $90 for
the airplane. Assume it is all gas at $3/gal. So that is 30 gal or 15
gal out and 15 back. At 10 gph, we have to get the hamburgers within a
1.5 hr radius. With lots of assumptions, mostly 100 kts, we must get
the burgers...

I meet their criteria as a current, instrument rated, 300 hr pilot, but I
don't know how much use they would get from me as a renter, not owner.
Anyone here able to enlighten me?

Old joke on night landings by
Danny Dot
My instructor taught me how to do a night emergency landing.
1. When the engine fail, leave the landing light off
2. When 100 feet off the ground, turn the landing light on
3. If you like what you see, leave the light on
4. If you don't like what you see, turn the light back off.

Completely off-topic help needed :) by

One of my 8 year old son's class assignment questions reads, "How can
you look at the clouds and know if it is about to snow?". Never having
seen snow, I hadn't the foggiest idea. Asked a few friends and none
knows either! A quick search on the internet but came up blank,
probably because I haven't...

Two good aviation shows on PBS by

I recently saw "Wings of Madness", a show about Alberto Santos-Dumont's
contribution to aviation, and was quite impressed by his accomplishments
and altruistic endeavors.
If you haven't caught "Warplanes", yet, the second installment (2 hrs.)
will be showing on PBS on Wednesday, 11/15. The first...
