Fuel efficiency contest by
eracervinn
For those who built their airplanes for greater efficiency:
At this year's Copperstate Southwest Regional Fly-in, we will be
hosting another fuel efficiency contest. New for this year is an
additional 200 mile competition for aircraft flying the course at 60
to 119 miles an hour average...

Are 100% electric ultralights around? by
YouHelpBuild.com
What problems can anyone forsee to building a 100% electric ultralight
aircraft for short & mid-range commuters to get back & forth to work
(aside from air traffic issues... it IS a big sky after all)? I
understand the average commute is less than 30 miles in land based
vehicles which would...

FA EBAY: Evans Volksplane VP1 ( You won't find a nicer VP1) by
JR
There seems to be some jealousy and bitter bigots trying to bad mouth this
plane its ebay listing in addition to defaming me. This plane is priced to
sell and built professionally and has hundreds of hour flown off of it
safely. I refuse to have dialouge with any of these Keyboard Rangers...

Small turbines for homebuilts? by
David Findlay
Has there been any development of small jet engines for light aircraft, like
the engines used on the Eclipse 500? Small turbines would be great for high
performance homebuilts if they were cheap enough. Anything down to the
price level that could compete with high horsepower Lycoming's...

Driving sheet-metal screws into 4130 by
Grandpa B.
Greetings, all.
I'm restoring a Champ, and have a question about driving screws into a
drilled 4130 tube.
If I drill the proper sized hole, the screws refuse to 'take'; they simply
give up their threads to the harder metal of the tube. If I over-size the
hole, then the screw won't hold diddley...

Looking for a sub-100hp engine with long TBO time. by
tffy
This is for a hypothetical ultralight design, so just looking for
suggestions here of where to look at... hopefully a 4-stroke, purchase
price doesn't matter much, certification status doesn't matter either.
Long time before overhaul matters A LOT... so, the longer the better.
Is there anything out...

Instrument mounting question by
Rob Turk
I'm looking for some guidance on safely mounting instruments in an alumimium
panel. Our panel is about 2mm (about 1/12th inch) thick. We had all the
shapes laser cut, so everything fits well.
What do most of you do with deep, heavy instruments like a gyro? Is it safe
to just use the screws on the...

Homebuilding Killed John Walton by
Carl
I just read in the newspaper that John Walton, the billionaire son of
Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton, was killed in a homebuilt airplane? That
got me thinking to look for a NG that might be dedicated to this
activity, and I found this one.
This is all new to me, quite honestly, and disturbing. ...

Orphaned Engine by
[email protected]
Most Experts Aren’t. That's something the late Smokey Yunick said
back when I was a seaman deuce. Every month my mail delivers one or
two messages saying it's still true. The messages usually come from
some superbly experienced fellow who has literally spent his life
working on cars or trucks. He...

Control surface design question by
Chris W
I'm sure everyone here is familiar with the combination of the
horizontal stabilizer and elevator to make a stabilator. I think I have
even heard of the concept being used for a ruder. My question is has
anyone ever made a plane taking the concept all the way and made a
"wingeron"? My guess...

bell xp-77-info? by
J. Paaso
whilst taking a break from my main project
(http://www.dlc.fi/~jmpaaso/experimental/), I stumbled upon the
concept of Bell xp-77. Being all wooden, it appealed to me and now I
would like to hear anything and everything concerning this aircraft.
Are there any existing drawings ? anywhere, anyone?...

Air Conditioning System for Homebuilts? by
JPAviation
Hi,
Here is a new design challenge for those of you with homebuilts with all the
bells and whistles.
The 2004 Toyota Prius hybrid car has a Denso electrically powered air
conditioning compressor that apparently does not need to be mounted on the
engine. This offers the possibility of reasonably...

control cable questions by

Having to reject the last nicropress
on the rudder, two strands were cut when the nircopress was cut off with a
drmel tool.
The question is whether we can reinstall a nicropress in the original
position and then add one an 1/8" further?? or,
Make splice two lengths of control cable with double...

NACA profile calculations by
jan olieslagers[_2_]
I have got into plotting NACA profiles by computing. Humbly beginning
with the simplest, which I presume to be NACA 4-digit, I found the
Wikipedia page as a prime source of information.
Plotting a symmetrical profile is not that hard: at regular intervals
(=X along the chord), one calculates...

Chewed-up coupling connector - How-to? by

Folks - The oil pressure sensor/tube is secured to the engine block of
my A-65 by a brass connector which is getting pretty chewed up; Over
the years previous owners apparently using something other than the
correct tool to tighten it down.
I'm told (please correct me if my understanding is...
