Radio Range Question by
Charles Wood
Hello All,
Hoping some experts/old timers might help me on a basic Radio Range
question.
I understand the principle of merging the A's and the N's to get the
on-beam signal.
I have been told that, while originally this merge created a
continuous, uninterrupted tone except for the station...

So Much Work For Those Two Words - Instrument Airplane by
David B. Cole
Posted this one somewhere else, but wanted to share with the gang on
the newsgroups.
Dave
Well, after one year, two instructors, 9 hours actual, and nearly 70
hours of training I passed the instrument checkride. It was
originally scheduled for Tuesday, but if you read my other post you
know that...

First TSA, now NASCAR by
David Brooks
I haven't heard a peep from anyone in aviation about this, but now it
appears the Northwest can't survive without a NASCAR track, and yesterday
the finalist was announced. Marysville, just a hair south of Arlington
(AWO). From the...

YOUR safety is at risk by

ILS DME strength? by
Jim Burns
Does anybody know the typical range of the DME signal when DME is installed
in conjunction with a localizer or ILS?
I shot an ILS yesterday that had it's compass locator decommissioned some
time ago, so now the approach requires a VOR or DME, which is fine, because
we've got both in addition to...

KLN94 LOC DME Source by
Greg Esres
Anyone have a tip as to the best way to enter the LOC DME source on
the KLN94?
The NRST function won't always pick it up, if there are a lot of
intersections around.
I've tried loading the fix into an alternate flight plan, and then do
a DIRECT operation later, but I couldn't get that to work.

Changing course to do sightseeing - practical (with clearance) when IFR? by
Mitchell Gossman
Flying one of the kids on an IFR flight plan with decent VMC, she
asked to circle some landmarks in Minneapolis/St. Paul Class B. I
found myself saying "cancel IFR, request clearance to remain in class
B with traffic advisories for some sightseeing". No problem, I
remained on same squawk with the...

GPS 16L at KHEF by
PA28Rdrvr
Hello. I see there are lots of smart folks in this NG and I learn a lot
from you. I have a question that I sure someone can answer for me. I'm not
so knowledgeable about some of the GPS approach procedures. I was reviewing
the GPS 16L @ KHEF (Manassas VA) and am not sure which DH is applicable...

Aviation Book Recommendation "Touching History" by
tscottme[_2_]
I just finished a book about the aviation details of Sept 11 attacks.
"Touching History" by Lynn Spencer was a quick read. I picked it up a
couple hours before bedtime expecting to get through a couple of chapters
and turn in. I stayed up hours past my bedtime and read about 95% of the
book...

What happened on this ILS approach? by
Peter R.
This morning I flew into Erie (KERI), a class D airport in northwest
Pennsylvania along Lake Erie. Weather was low IFR with 500 foot ceilings,
4 mile visibility, and winds out of the southwest. An ILS to runway 24 was
in...

Garmin 530 trip by
Al
I recently got intoduced to the Garmin 530. Nice box, advertises 3D nav, but
I couldn't find any referance to step down altitudes on the approach. Is
this not available? I find it hard to believe that they would store every
fix and route in the Western Hemishpere, and leave out a vital portion...

Must file to an IAF? by
David Megginson
Ron Rosenfeld wrote:
And if your destination does not have weather reporting? (Or even nearby
weather reporting) and has multiple IAF's?
Just so. Bigger airports will often be using more than one IAF
simultaneously, especially if the winds are not strong. The preferred
approach at my home...

IFR along Chicago lakefront by
paul kgyy
I raised a question about this a while back. V7 runs a little farther
offshore than I'm comfortable with in my single. I recently filed V7
from northern WI south to Gary, IN. When I got to Milwaukee, ATC
started to vector me, steering me much closer to land than the filed
route. I hadn't asked...

AnywhereWx vs. AirGator NavAirWx by
Jonathan Goodish
Thanks to all who replied to my in-flight weather questions.
I think that I've narrowed my selection down to a PDA solution using the
iPaq 4700, along with packages for XM weather an moving map from either
Control Vision (AnywhereWx) or AirGator (NavAirWx).
Detailed information on the web sites...
