Aspen at night by
Ron Garret
All the approach plates for Aspen are marked "Procedure not authorized
at night" (presumably a result of the G4 crash a few years back). And
yet there are commercial flights scheduled to land as Aspen at night.
How do they do it?

VOR/DME Approach Question by
Chip Jones
I'm hoping one or more of you instrument pilots (or controllers) could help
me with an IAP question. The airport involved is RKW, which is Rockwood,
Tennessee. The IAP in question is the VOR/DME RWY 22 into Rockwood. If you
have the plate or know the procedure, I hope you can help me out.
RKW...

More on Fuel Management - and an Ethical Dilemma by
Greg Farris
In the June AOPA Pilot "State of General Aviation" issue, Bruce
Landsberg gives a gold star to Cessna, for their new production singles,
which, according to the article, have not suffered a single fuel
mismanagement accident. Well, I know of one near-miss, which could have
broken that record, and...

Glaze Ice by
brian whatcott
I did an Oxford instrument ground school long ago.
One of the weather topics was glaze ice. This was described as extremely
dangerous, in that supercooled rain could impact and flow to a glassy
ice layer over the wing in seconds, which tended to pull the aircraft
down pronto.
In the last three...

Transponder by
Tom Cummings
My King KT-76A transponder has a stuck "Ident" button.
It stuck when activated for ATC on the last flight and the button appears to
have colapsed sideways underneath the cover panel. It is no longer visible
in the opening now. ATC says the unit indicates an "Indent" signal
presently.
Does this...

2 aircraft cleared onto the same runway at the same time by
Tom Fleischman
This was a new one for me.
I was IFR this afternoon out of HPN for short practice flight. I was in
sequence number two at the runway waiting for departure. As the tower
controller cleared the Cessna in front of me to position and hold, he
asked him his direction of flight. The Cessna pilot...

How do you leave this airport IMC? by
Journeyman
On the way to Pinckneyville last weekend, I stopped at Jimmy Stewart
Field, Indiana, PA. KIDI. I had to shoot the GPS 28 approach with
a cirle to land 10. There's a nice transition off the Revloc VOR.
Since we had a late start, we had planned to stop there for the night,
but by the time we left...

Are "Popups" A Hassle? by
skym
For the ATC guys: I frequently have departed VFR, but then do a popup
if needed. Frequently these are sortof foreseeable possibilities, but
often enough I have been able to proceed VFR all the way. I've often
wondered just how much of a hassle it is to ATC to have to deal with a
popup.

Completing the Non-precision approach as a Visual Approach by
John Clonts
I'm inbound on the final approach segment of the VOR-A approach at T82
(Fredericksburg Texas):

At about 3 miles east of the airport I'm at the MDA of 2460 MSL ("766 AGL"),
mostly in a 700 foot overcast. Through a break in...

Charted Visual Flight Procedures by
Scott Draper
An airline pilot of my acquaintance related about accepting a charted
visual flight procedure into Reno, part of which involves intercepting
a localizer course. He said they were IMC at the time.
My understanding is that the aircraft must reporting seeing a landmark
or preceding aircraft before...

You are in IMC, when *everything* fails! Now what? by
Thomas Pappano
Hello All,
There has been much discussion here about the obvious benefits of
redundant systems, engines, vacuum, electrical etc., when flying in IMC.
We've also read NTSB reports of crashes of very well equipped planes
where the pilot did not make use of redundant instruments.
As for myself and...

Does an IPC count as a BFR? by
Larry Jenkins
Okay, I've read the regulations and still can't figure out the answer to
this question: If I received an IPC from a CFII one year after my last BFR,
do I need to get another BFR in 12 months or 24 months from now??
Thanks in advance,
Larry

Commercial certificate question by
Matt Whiting
I think I know the answer to this, but would like a second opinion.
Does FAR 61.129 (a)(3) (iii) and (iv) really require an instructor ride
along on these two long VFR flights? I have over 600 hours TT and an
instrument rating and plan to obtain my commercial certificate.
however, in reviewing my...

MS Flight Sim by
Dennis Johnson
Greetings,
I think those who are arguing that flying MS Flight Sim isn't really
"flying" are on the losing side of the argument. Flying is flying, I don't
care if it's a Cub without an electrical system or a computer running MS
Flight Sim. As far as general procedures go, MS Flight Sim gives...

Why publish a plate for an OTS approach? by
Paul Tomblin
I'm just reading IFR Refresher, and it has a report on an accident that
happened after a King Air was cleared for an SDF approach at KSME.
According to the article, at the time the A/FD and NTAP listed the SDF as
"Out of Service (OTS) - Indefinitely", and had been for four years, but
the plate was...

When to descend by
Dan Luke[_2_]
You are coming from northeast of SFB. ATC says "Cleared direct UDUZI,
maintain 4000' until established, cleared RNAV 9L approach."

When do you descend below 4,000 and to what altitude?

Are handheld GPSes becoming a defacto primary nav source? by
Paul Tomblin
This week I did several IFR flights, some in IMC and most in VMC. On a
couple of those flights, ATC offered me direct to the next VOR after the
one I was navigating to, well before I could actually pick up the signal.
One time departing Rochester, they told me to go direct Elmira when I was
less...
