Counterweighting to prevent flutter by [email protected]
Is there a simple (or complex) guideline for the relationships between CG, pivot axis and aerodynamic center for a control surface to prevent flutter? Is it as simple as keeping the CG at or ahead of the aerodynamic center, similar to designing for stability of the aircraft itself? -- FF

Naive antiservo tab question by [email protected]
IIUC an antiservo tab works by deflecting a control surface in one direction so that the control surface then exerts a torque in the opposite direction. For example, suppose you have an airplane that tends to yaw to the right with the rudder and ailerons in their neutral positions. An antiservo...

Wow, those airbusses are big by [email protected]
OK, I know they aren't homebuilt but this really impressed me: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/09/22/earlyshow/main878702.shtml .... "Christiana Lund, 25, just moved to New York from the L.A. area, and had gone back to pick up her car, which was with her on the plane. " ....

Alloys for certified parts? by [email protected]
I have run across someone who insists that 6061 T6 is not "aircraft grade aluminum". He claims that there are no certified parts made from 6061. I find that hard to believe. Aren't there certified aircraft with welded aluminum frames? -- FF

Were radials usually long-stroke engines? by [email protected]
Looking over the available illustrations on the net it appears that the typical radial aircraft engine had a stroke longer than the bore (undersquare). Is that right? It would make sense for high torque at lower RPMs. -- FF

Bending graphlite rod by [email protected]
The data on the Marske website about the graphlite (TM) rod they use indicates a glass transition temperature of 212F. So I tried heating some with a heat gun to see if I could put a permanent bend in it. No luck. I think maybe it uses a phenolic resin which is thermosetting, rather than...

Bradley Huggins and Doug Hart news. by [email protected]
It looks like he's moved to Spanish Fork, Utah and now calling his company Bradley Aircraft, instead of Bradley Aerospace. He also has a You Tube channel. In other news, it has been reported that Doug Hart of 'Hart Aero' has been charged with 'stealing by deceit' and other charges are...

Motrcycle conversions. by [email protected]
A while ago, in a Corvair engine thread I asked about motorcycle engine conversions. Since then I have found a yahoo group on the subject. I think at least one BMW footwarmer conversion is pictured in the photos section. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/moto-air/?yguid=74612434 While new BMW...

Sport Pilot inconsistency by frustrated flier
I am unclear on two Sport Pilot issues: First, a new pilot may qualify for a Sport Pilot ticket even though he or she takes a medication that would preclude a 3rd class medical. However, an experienced pilot with a higher ticket may not operate as a Sport Pilot if he lost a medical last year for...

Flying wires by [email protected]
Just out of curiosity, I notice that all of the Pitts aircraft have flying and landing wires attached on only the main spars, and the Acro Sport aircraft have them attached on both the main and rear spars. From what I have seen, the wings on both aircraft aren't made much differently, and I...

Slightly OT, but since this is the only group I frequent, here goes. My wife and I are making our first trip to Hawaii for a much needed vacation. I have always wanted to fly around Oahu and see Ford Island and other areas by air. My intention is to get checked out in a 152 or 172 and sightsee...
