What's a "Cloverleaf" Maneuver? by
Stephen Harding
In a description of an alledged fight between American
pilot named Lawrence in a P-38 versus Adolf Galland in
a Ta-152 (or was that an FW 190D??), Lawrence mentions
a "cloverleaf" maneuver that apparently positioned him
well against Galland.
From the context of the story, I gather it was...

What's the point in such camo schemes... by
Bonehammer
....as those applied to the Backfire and Fencer? I know of
anti-radiation white applied to the underside of nuclear bombers, but
the reason of white leading edges on the Su-24 escaps me - seems
'anti'camouflage. Perhaps it helps in disguising the shape of the
'incoming' from visible/IR sensors on...

What's Wrong with Economics and how can it be Fixed
Traditionally economics is the study of how scarce resources are or should
be allocated. In particular, it has involved themes such as choices,
trade-offs, markets, prices, information, needs, behaviour, satisfaction,
business, government, growth...

Whatever happened to "Ivan the Bear"? by
Bill Burns
I used to enjoy reading his Russian aviation articles, and always looked for
his postings but I have not seen them for many months. Everytime I log onto
this group, I sort the messages by "From" to look for his postings.
Anyone know where he went or maybe he's changed his "From" name and I've
never...

When Thunder Rolled by
Cub Driver
I happened to be conversing (actually, e-conversing) with Smithsonian
Institution Press yesterday, and I was told that Ed Rasimus's book,
When Thunder Rolled, is being reprinted. For SIP, this is unheard of!
It was published only in March. Two years is more like it, and most
SIP books never go back...

When to start building the B3? by
Henry J. Cobb
There will be a B3 manned heavy bomber.
The mission is not going away.
The big question is will the United States be able to build a bomber
that is a big enough improvement on the B2 to justify the development
before we run out of heavy bombers?
I think the answer is yes.

When will the war against terrorism begin? by
ArtKramr
Two nations clearly culpable in 9/11 are Iran and Saudi Arabia. Iraq is an
irrelevant diversion. Therefore at this time the war against terrorism has not
yet begun. Will the neocons ever launch a war against terrorism?

Where's my Purple Heart? by
Jack
I had a wound over my eyebrow which required six stitches while serving
in Viet Nam and I didn't get a purple heart.
I think the fact that Kerry's PH was issued in spite of the fact that
his lesser wound resulted from misemployment of his own weapon indicates
that I should have received the PH as...

Which Military Service is best? by

Military service
A Soldier, a Sailor, an Airman and a Marine got into an argument about which

Which post-WW2 combat aircraft have not been used in combat? by
Kirk Stant
Just for fun, off the top of your heads, which post-WW2 combat
aircraft (any country) have NOT been used in their intended roles in
an actual shooting war (or police action, or soccer riot, or whatever
it's called these days)?
And why?
Some ROE:
1. Combat aircraft means it was designed or...

Whirrlygig C-130! by
Stephen Harding
I know it's just "Popular Mechanics", but the idea seemed pretty good.
The Army is looking into adding a big set of rotor blades on the roof
of a C-130 Hercules for the purpose of forward supply of its units.
The blades would have small jets faired into their tips providing the
spin. This would...
