LAS approaches by
Ron Garret
Some questions about flying to LAS:
1. The RNAV RWY 1R (http://naco.faa.gov/d-tpp/0903/00662R1R.PDF) has
two IAFs: BOACH and SKEBR. I can find BOACH on the enroute chart (on
V21 between WHIGG and CRESO) but not SKEBR. Where is it?
2. Same question for KACCY intersection, which is the IAF...

What do you do in the real world? by
Ron Garret
Last night I flew from SJC to VNY. To my astonishment I was cleared
vectors to SNS, then direct VNY (despite having filed a more standard
routing) at 9000 feet. I knew perfectly well that the routing was going
to change because I've done that route a zillion times, and indeed, near...

New on-line instrument approach plate service by
Ron Garret
I am pleased to announce the beta launch of a new on-line instrument
approach plate service at http://siap.awun.net/
This service collects all the plates you need for a trip into a single
PDF file. Try it out and let me know if you think it's useful.
(There's a feedback form at the end.) The...

Aspen at night by
Ron Garret
All the approach plates for Aspen are marked "Procedure not authorized
at night" (presumably a result of the G4 crash a few years back). And
yet there are commercial flights scheduled to land as Aspen at night.
How do they do it?

Connecting enroute to approach charts by
Ron Garret
I'm going VNY-LAS. DUATS auto routing came up with a route that ends
at OASYS on V394. Trick is, OASYS is not an IAF for any approach into
LAS as far as I can tell. What should I do if I lose comm?
A related question: some approaches into LAS have IAFs that I can't find
on the enroute chart...

Why would someone choose to fly VFR on top? by
Ron Garret
Subject line says it all. In light of the fact that VFR on top subjects
you to both VFR and IFR constraints, why would anyone ever choose to fly
VFR on top? I can only think of two possible reasons:
1. There happens to be clear air at a +500 foot altitude and not at the
corresponding...

Garmin/Avidyne OBS weirdness by
Ron Garret
I fly an SR22G2 with the Avidyne MFD. When I try to use the OBS mode on
the Garmin 430 in VLOC mode it works fine -- the left knob on the MFD
controls the OBS, it draws a nice purple line, and everything is hunky
dory. But when I try to use OBS in GPS mode the MFD doesn't work. I
can still...

Portable IMC emergency panel by
Ron Garret
Howdy,
I fly a Cirrus SR22, an all-electric plane. It has dual-redundant power
busses, which makes total electrical failure unlikely, but if it does
happen in IMC it can really ruin your day, so I'm thinking about a
backup plan. Obviously a portable GPS and Comm unit are first on the
priority...

Lost comm procedures by
Ron Garret
A couple of related questions. You'll want to get your southern
California approach plates out to follow this.
1. The preferred tower-enroute IFR routing from VNY to SNA ends at SLI,
but SLI is not an IAF for any approach into SNA. What should you do if
you lose comm before ATC starts to vector...

Emergency paperwork by
Ron Garret
I declared my first ever emergency yesterday after encountering
unexpected ice. I only accumulated about 1/4 inch so it wasn't that big
a deal, but I lost my engine gauges (I fly an SR22), which included my
OAT, so I went ahead and declared so I could descend below the MEA to
shed the ice...

Logging approaches by
Ron Garrison
I had a 'first' last week, and I am looking for other peoples thoughts on
this one. It was my first (I believe) loggable instrument approach in what
was legally VMC. I was flying from the San Francisco bay area down to
Burbank. The reported conditions were sky clear, visibility 4 miles in...

Garmin GPSmap 496 False Terrain Alert by
Ron Gordon
Do any of you fly into KADS with a Garmin GPSmap 496? I'm getting a false
terrain alert when flying the Rwy 15 ILS and am wondering if anyone else has
this problem. I'm working with Garmin to resolve this, but so far what they
have suggested has not solved the problem.
When flying the...

Northstar M1 Loran Battery by
Ron Gordon
I recently purchased a database update for my Northstar M1 LORAN from CMC
Electronics and a new battery which they also list on their Web site.
Replacing the EPROM database was easy, but I cannot find where the battery
goes. Has anyone replaced the battery in the M1? Where is it?
Thanks!

Autopilot use during approach by
Ron Gordon
I've moved up to a new plane that includes an S-Tec 50 autopilot. It has
several very capable modes ranging from Wings Leveler, Track a Heading bug,
Follow NAV input, Hold a set Altitude, and approach mode which tracks NAV
input more closely.
What do the regs say about the permissible use of an...

GNS 430W vs GNS 480 by
Ron Gordon
I'm going to add either the GNS 430W or GNS 480 to a Beach Bonanza and am
wondering if any of you who fly with these GPS units have a recommendation?
I'd like a very capable IFR GPS with integrated NAV/COM abilities, which
I'll couple to my S-TEC 50 Autopilot with GPSS. Both the 430W and 480 are...

IFR approaches to airports with buildings in protected zone by
Ron Lee[_2_]
Please ignore my lack of detailed knowledge of TERPS type stuff but
are there any US airports with GPS approaches where there are
buildings inside the lateral protected zone? Supposedly if an airport
does not meet such criteria there may be a way to get a waiver using
some sort of...

One week to comment on ADS-B Out NPRM...or you will lose. by
Ron Lee[_2_]
There is one week left to comment on this onerous and fatally flawed
FAA proposal that may cost as much as $17,000 per aircraft with
little to no benefit to the GA community.
My website at StopADS-B.org/ADS.htm gives details. You can also
read about it at aopa.org.
You can read comments,...
