Well, after many years of doing illustrations for Internet Modeler, Czech Master Resin, and several publications, I have decided to make large-size prints of my artwork available to the masses. Right now there's just a few dozen profiles available, but as time goes on I'll be adding many,...

Good Good America by Chris Mark
The below link is to the music video "Good Good America" by Cpl, John Preston and L.Cpl. Nick Hoffmann, 2nd Batt., 7th Marines, somewhere in western Iraq. The duo created the video because they were frustrated with the news media's narrow focus on US casualties to the exclusion of the broader...

Dutch rolls by Chris Mark
Cub Driver wrote: Gilmore, alone, also entered the fray but was quickly latched onto by a Zero he shook off with a series of Dutch rolls What is a Dutch roll in this context? It's usually applied to oscillations that can't be damped out, as in the Northrop YB-49 Flying Wing bomber. I can't...

Bob the bombardier has passed on by Chris Mark
A while back I posted a story about Bob, bombardier of a B-25 that ditched on the way back to Corsica after a mission. Bob saved the lives of both the pilot, who was injured in the cockpit, and the tail gunner, who was trapped in the aft compartment. Well, Bob Denbo, I learn, has passed on, age...

Antoine de St-Exupery's plane found by Chris Mark
This excerpt from St. Exupery's Letter to an American Friend seems appropriate, now that his plane has finally been found: "After the long winter of the Armistice, the seed sprouted. My squadron once again blossomed in the daylight like a tree. I once again experience the joy of those...

Not everybody wants to fight by Chris Mark
Been exchanging memoirs with some vets and offer this extract, fwiw: "One of the pilots that was with me in cadet and P-40 training was transferred to a non-flying assignment. He had been with the squadron since September 1943 and had not flown one combat mission. He just didn’t want to fly the...

Butch's story by Chris Mark
FWIW: "I entered the Army, in the delayed nntry program, on March 4, 1965. I was a senior in High School. I had enlisted for career choice and that was Army aviation. I graduated on June 12 and left for basic training on June 14 at age 17. Basic was at Fort Knox and then advanced training at...

The Wisconsin School by Chris Mark
I was discussing with a friend the Gar Alperovitz episode and remarking on how regrettable it was that even in a military-oriented newsgroup visited by people with an interest in Cold War history and whose lives have been directly affected by his views, he is an unknown. And that led us to the...

P-39s, Zeros & A-24s by Chris Mark
Little item from my friend doing P-39 research: 7 P-39s escort 7 A-24s on an anti-shipping strike to Buna summer 1942. Flying at 9,000 feet, 3 Zeros going the opposite direction at 11,000 feet spot them and peel off in an attack. Descending dogfight ensues until Zeros break off at 4,000 feet. ...

The prisoners of Rabaul (Was: P-39's, zeros, etc.) by Chris Mark
From: Cub Driver lo ed flying to Australia in one of them. I can look this up in Bloody Shambles if you like. I just bought this two-volume set (and damned pricey at 29.95 pounds per volume) with high hopes. Haven't begun on it yet, but noting your comment above I turned to the description of...

AAA at Bataan/Corregidor by Chris Mark
Well, the people who know about this stuff know *all* about it through--to them--obvious sources---post-war Wainwright staff debriefs, Duty Journals and other documents (so much for burning sensitive documents!) captured by the Japanese, shipped to Japan and recovered there at war's end, all on...

Capt Pease mission by Chris Mark
Here's an eyewitness account, by Capt. Fred Wesche: "This is a formation of six airplanes. The Japanese were getting ready to mount a large expeditionary force to relieve their garrisons on New Guinea, and the Col. announced it was going to be done in broad daylight, at noontime, as a...

Embedded by Chris Mark
Just finished a good read on the most recent Iraq war, "Embedded," by--drat! brain function failure again!--anyway, the online booksellers will have the details. It's a series of vignettes of various embedded reporters' adventures. I know that doesn't sound like much, but it really is a...

Noting that a new edition of "American EmpiThe Realities and Consequences of U.S. Diplomacy" by Andrew J. Bacevich, published by Harvard University Press, is coming out in a couple of weeks, with a paperback edition coming in March, I thought I'd give a heads up to those on the NG who have an...

Volume 7, Number 6 · October 20, 1966 Letter COUNTER-INTELLIGENCE By Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., Reply by Gar Alperovitz In response to The Double Dealer (September 8, 1966) To the Editors: Surely the time has come to blow the whistle before the current outburst of revisionism regarding the origins...

[OT] Nothing Learned From History by Chris Mark
From: "Emmanuel Gustin" Emmanuel.Gustin@skynet. Seems to me that comparing Dubyah to FDR is a huge insult to FDR. Then there is FDR's November 1944 Fenway Park speech: "I am sure that any real American would have chosen, as this government did, to fight when our own soil was made the object...

I have an utterly stupid question. What is the difference between these two fighters? From a distance, they look exactly the same.
