City controlled airspace? by
Dallas
I stumbled upon the Aircraft and Airports section of the Dallas City Codes
and found a whole new layer of regulations I never knew about.
Here's a good one. As a student, I guess I need to call my instructor
every time I need to start the engine:
SEC. 5-24. ONLY PILOT OR COMPETENT MECHANIC...

Any Ideas on Turning off the Spammer? by
Kyle Boatright
I'm seeing a huge number of spam postings in this group. I'm sure they are
from a bot, but since the address keeps switching, I don't know how to block
the messages in OE.
Suggestions?

A little positive GA news coverage by
Jay Honeck
http://tinyurl.com/239ane
The reporter got almost every detail wrong -- but, hey, it's positive
news about young people flying, and it was published in a Gannett-
owned periodical... We'll take it!

C172 and Spins by
Dan[_10_]
Anyone else have expereince with the C172E (1964)?
No matter what I did I could not get that bird to spin to the right.
Left spins take some work, and power helps (of course).
But right it just wallows and then steep spirals.

Busted TFR, what to expect? by
bob
Seems I busted a VIP TFR Monday near Sacramento (VP Cheney was in town
raising money for a couple of congressmen). On landing at my
destination I was asked by the airport manager to call an ATC number,
who got my info and said they would forward it to the local FSDO as a
"pilot deviation". I'm...

Conventional v tricycle gear by
[email protected]
Other than the 'holier than thou' aspects of taildraggers and their
pilots, what are their real advantages? Has it to do with prop
clearance on unimproved fields, or fatter mains being better in that
same environment? Does anyone know if, with the same level of
experience pilots, they have a better...

Altimeter Calibration Height by
TheSmokingGnu
Here's one that may seem silly: to what height, precisely, is an
altimeter calibrated to?
The bottom of the landing gear? The height of the static port? the chord
line of the fuselage? In a Cessna, the difference between these is
minimal, but on an airliner, you're talking about a possible +/-...

Testing your glide. Are people doing this? by
Montblack
("Yossarian" wrote in the Catalina Perep thread)
My first trip I was that low too, but now my FBO insists on a continuous
climb to the middle of the channel for better glide distance if your
engine
quits. 4500' in a 172 is only like 7 miles glide.
I wonder how many people have actually...

CFI oral intel by
gatt[_4_]
One of the folks around the hangar took his CFI practical last week. He
had his AGI so they threw out all of the Fundamentals of Instruction
stuff entirely during the oral.
A question the examiner asked him: "You're flying cross-country and
trimmed at 110 knots. You die, and the engine quits....

Spooky flights by
Mxsmanic
Sometimes some people get spooked when driving out in the middle of
nowhere (especially the desert southwest of the USA) for various
reasons. Obviously darkness, isolation, and a lack of signs of
civilization and humanity can play a role in getting one's mind to
wander in the wrong directions. ...

Bertie's Supporters and Sockpuppets - Vol 3 by

Like many people here have said, your are either part of the problem, or
part of the solution. If you guy insist on welcoming the asshole, he will
always be around.
A vote for Bertie is a vote for filth, confusion, cross posting, forging,
lying, making fun of someone's deceased relatives, etc. Let...

Post-Annual Flight by
Jay Honeck[_2_]
We decided to move the annual inspection for Atlas -- our '74 Cherokee
Pathfinder -- into February, since there has been little use for an airplane
this winter. As a result of the weather and the annual (bless me Father,
for I have sinned...) it had been 20 days since our last flight.
I've...

Emergency Descents with ATC COMS - Video by

Had never done an emergency descent with banking as a tool. It was
suggested to me to try this with a 90 degree bank.
Very interesting experience as it really works and works quickly! I
tried 2 without banking and 2 with banking of which the video...

I've finally Had It! by
Jay Honeck[_2_]
I've had it. Despite my attempts to ignore the Berties and the
Maxwells of this NG, I give up.
I'm giving R.A.P a pause for a while. I'll come back when it cleans
up its act, maybe.

Hot shot pilots are scum! by
Labia Veteran
If I ever meet a hotshot pilot in real life they would not walk away from
the experience. I keep a bayonnet around for idiots like that who bomb
innocent people for their own egos.
Except for the lower halfs of the hot black ones.

Cost of gas is beginning to hurt by
C J Campbell[_1_]
It cost me more than $40 at Costco yesterday to fill my gas tank. I
figure it costs me at least $10 in gas every time I drive to the
airport -- and I have a hybrid car. I am beginning to wonder how long
some of the younger instructors can keep this up.

Diamond DA-40 with G-1000 pirep by

I got a demo flight in a Diamond DA-40 equipped with the Garmin G-1000 glass
cockpit this morning. We departed IFR from Tacoma Narrows and flew west for
some maneuvers. This plane was the second one out of the factory with the
G-1000. I had a difficult time maintaining my altitude; the altitude...
