Growler Vs. F-22 by [email protected]
First a Growler downs an F-22 during combat exercises. Now this: "Cartwright, appearing before the panel for a confirmation hearing as part of his nomination for a second stint as vice chairman, said the Joint Staff and Air Force had just concluded a study on sizing the F-22 fleet. He said the...

Grumman Avenger as nightfighters? by Prowlus
According to several scources the Grumman Avenger was used as an improvised nightfighter on the USS Enterprise since radars at that time were too big to fit onto Hellcats or Corsairs . Now does this seem pointless or what? Surely the Curtiss Helldiver would have been a far better nightfighting...

Grumman Iron by clyde61
You'all realize that when the EA-6B is retired in favor of the new EA-18G Growler, the only Grumman-built aircraft still in service in the navy will be the E-2 hawkeye and the C-2 Greyhound, right? So, Include here, a few pictures as sort of my tribute to seventy years of great contributions to...

Gun Pods on Navy F-4s: Why not? by Matt Wiser
As the air war over NVN heated up in 1966-67, why didn't the Navy adopt the SUU-23 gun pod on its Phantoms? The AF's 366th TFW certainly did, and got several MiG kills as a result of the pods' usage. What was the reason? NAVAIR not approve or what? Navy F-4 crews were screaming for a gun all...

gunpods on Phantoms by Rob van Riel
Navy Phantoms were capable of carrying a 20mm gunpod, but there is an abundance of references stating this weapon was worse than useless for air to air use, and thus not carried. However, I can't really find any reference on the use of the gun in air to ground work. I know Air Force Phantoms used...

Guns on fighters? by SKSvilich
All...I was wondering: have there been any guns-only air to air kills by US aircraft since SE Asia? As an aside, what are the thoughts of those who have been in combat? Are guns on board nostalga, or, are they a practical weapon? Thanks in advance. Stefan Humble Cessna Driver

RAMN has now existed 13 years. Quite a stretch of time. Sadly though we've seen what was a vibrant forum for naval aviation fade away. Can we get back on track with some relevant articles? I'd like read comments of our drivers about their experiences coming aboard with various aircraft. ...

Have you ever seen a C-130 Hercules trying to do a hover over the runway ? by Iwan Bogels
Check out http://www.dappa.nl/crash.htm This video is about a (then) highly classified project to land a C-130 at a soccer field, and get it back airborne from the same field with even more load than during landing. The landing test caused the Herc to virtually hover over the site, and the video...
