Old American solid rivets by Matt
Hi all, A slightly unusual question to pose to you all. I was wondering if anyone might know if the old A17 series (S and ST) solid rivets had a more domed head on them than the current AN470/MS20470 series do? Would be interested to hear any thoughts on this. Many thanks and have a great...

I would like to let everyone know on this historic occasion (December 17th 2003 being the 100th anniversary of powered flight) that I have launched a new website on my Australian designed and built CA-13 Boomerang world war two fighter aircraft. The site includes images of the derelict airframe...

Taylorcraft: Potential project available by Michael Horowitz
Folks - I had an 'incident' with my T'craft last month. We've been totaling up the costs and up until yesterday things looked good, then we took what the A&P called a "dial-out' reading on the engine and it is out of limits by .004. I don't know if that was there when I bought the a/c or was due...

Removing a finger strap by Michael Horowitz
Assume a finger strap around a tube and you wish to save the tube. How do you 'unweld'/remove the finger strap? Can't chuck the piece. so I'm thinking grinding with an angle grinder is the secret. Anyone got thoughts? - Mike

Horizontal Stab. rusted on stubs by Michael Horowitz
I'm taking apart the tailfeathers of a Tcraft. Elevator came of fine. The two halves of the horizontal stabalizor slip over a fore and aft piece of tubing that is welded to the fuselage. The Cub does the same. The leading edge connection came apart without problem, but the trailing connection is...

Welding question - by Michael Horowitz
In preparation for doing some simple OA welding on a rudder, I've been practicing on some 4130 scrap. Since there is filler where it's not structurally important, I"ve been filing the excess material. All except one and it's as hard as if I were trying to file stainless. Is this an indication that...

Bending sheet stock by Michael Horowitz
I ordered some .020 4130 sheet about12x36 I notice the writing on the sheet runs parallel to the 12" edge. Do I understand then that the grain of the steel is parallel to the 12"edge? If I plan on bending this sheet, is there harm in bending across the grain? - Mike

Temporary, portable sand blasting 'cabinet'?? by Michael Horowitz
I can use the club's compressor, but I need to bring my bead-blaster to that location. Looking for schemes for erecting a temporary, portable sand blasting 'cabinet'. Thinking of something large enough for a rudder or smaller if we can insert half of the work at a time. Thinking of a poly-sheet...

Welding question by Mike
At http://www.taylorcraft.info/tcraft/proj207.jpg we see a restored tailsection. The bushing appears to have first been welded to a plate, and the plate in turn welded to the tailpost. Is that what was done? Is this done to help with alignment of the bushing? - Mike

Welding question: 43-13-1B, Fig.4-43 by Mike
Subject figure shows how to splice a streamlined tube. It seems to be saying use the same thickness/dimensions as the part being repaired, saw the trailing edge, force it open, and slip the splice over the part being repaired. Let's minimize bending the splice material by slipping it over the strut...

Forming finger straps. by Mike
A finger strap is a reinforcing piece of metal that is used to reinforce a joint. The impression I have is the strap is heated until it can be formed, then wrapped around both the primary and secondary tubing being joined. For both tubes the strap is formed around them. Is the strap tacked in...

Abrasive blasting references? by Mike
Can anyone suggest a text or other reference on abrasive ('sand') blasting for removing rust from an aircraft steel frame? It should discuss size of compressor, components I'll need, whether or not a booth is needed, what abrassive material to use. Thanks, Mike (in the meanwhile I'll polish off...
