Closing IFR flight plan at uncontrolled field by
paul kgyy
If you want to maintain IFR status until you're on the ground at an
uncontrolled field, who do you call when you're on the ground, assuming
there's no remote ARTCC radio facility within reach?
FSS?

Cloud Height Forecast by
[email protected]
If I'm thinking about flying somewhere in the northeast and returning
in a few days, it'll be very helpful to know forecast cloud height
three days down the road. Knowing it'll be "cloudy" isn't too
helpful. In my Archer (not approved for icing) a hugh difference
between an overcast layer at...

Cloud Tops/bases forecast? by
David
I'm looking for a tool that forecasts cloud bases and tops for a route
of flight. I use http://adds.aviationweather.gov to approximate this
by viewing the freezing levels, icing potential, pireps, etc., but it
seems with all our modern satellite and radar products as well as
weather service data...

CNS-80 VNAV by
John R. Copeland
After upgrading to software version 2, the CNS-80 offers a new
display page, resembling an HSI with a VDI pointer at its left.
The unit's computed VDI presentation is active for many GPS
approaches, as well as for all LNAV and LPV approaches.
However, I have not (yet) found in the pilot's manual...

CNX-80 "discontinuity" by
Roy Smith
When you put a flight plan into the CNX-80, you end up with a
"discontinuity" before the last fix. My habit is to delete the
discontinuity as soon as I finish entering the route. Another
instructor in my club teaches that you should NOT delete the
discontinuity.
I can't see any strong arguments...

CNX-80 question by
ROBIN FLY
I have seen some CNX-80 screen pictures with its built-in CDI showing the
course as a triangle, sometimes it points up and other times it points down.
What does it mean when it points up vs. down? Glideslope or VNAV?
Regards,
Robin Hou

CNX-80 says "No active waypoint" by
Roy Smith
Departing 1B1 today, we had only put in a skeleton of a flight plan
(origin and destination) in our CNX-80 and filled in the rest along the
way. At some point in this process, we got the message "No active
waypoint" (or words to that effect).
I've gotten this before, when reprograming flight...

CNX80 simulator question by
Lee Elson
Anybody know how to exit from simulator mode (in a real unit and in
the Windows simulator program, if different)? The Windows program
"remembers" which mode you are in so it appears impossible to exit
from the sim mode.

CNX80 versus GNS430 by
Wayne Sweet
I have an experimental airplane which now has a GX50 GPS and two comms, one
nav. The second comm is having problems, so intend to replace it and the
GX50 with either a CNX80 or a GNS430. Any comments on advantages of one over
the other??
In particular, which unit has the best comm/ILS qualities,...

Cockpit weather display question by
Chip Jones
OK, so there I was, training one of our scarce "newbie" controllers at ZTL
yesterday. There was a lot of convective weather and we were busy busy busy
trying to keep people from killing each other in the saddles and holes
between the storms. Anyway, as usual when I am training someone and...

Columns by a Canadian centre controller by
David Megginson
I have mixed feelings about Don Brown's columns on AvWeb -- sometimes I
learn from them, and sometimes they're just the same rants rehashed.
Today, I stumbled by accident on a series of online columns by a Michael
Oxner, a private pilot who works as a Canadian ACC controller at Moncton
Centre...

Comair 5191 HSI Heading Bugs? by
Sam Spade
Anyone familiar with how the autoflight/HSI interface works on a CRJ100
aircraft?
The NTSB just released the factual data on the Comair crash at Lexington.
Following is a summary page from the FDR report:
http://tinyurl.com/2zovqb
Does this mean the HSI heading bugs were also set to 226 or 227...
