A simpler plane to build... by
WJ
I lurk here off and on, but I found something the other day that I thought
you builders might get a chuckle from.
Many of you are probably familiar with Lindsay Press. They dredge up old
how-to books from the early days and reprint them. I was at a local
technical bookstore today, and found a...

Just Bought A Plane? STAY OUT OF FLORIDA ! by
WJRFlyBoy
http://tinyurl.com/24og9o
Read about the bewildering details of a number of long-suffering
non-resident pilots who have been caught in the FL tax trap, (otherwise
known as the "Florida Landing Fee").
It starts like this... you buy a new or used aircraft and sign the bill
of sale... which starts...

Metal fatigue in Lycoming engines limiting its TBO? by
Wolfgang
Is anyone aware of statistical or other data that would indicate what
percentage of engines make it well beyond the factory specified TBO,
and how much longer they can be flown safely? I worry about sudden
engine failure due to metal fatigue.
Many of the small Lyc. engines have a TBO of around...

What ever happened to the Subaru x-100 ? by
Wooduuuward
I know it was a car, but it looked like a jet trainer body, riding on three wheels.
It was around in 1981 or so. Had a Subaru twin cylinder engine rated at 100 mpg.

Chicago lawyers plane found in Toronto harbour by
Wooduuuward
I heard on the radio that a small plane from Chicago went missing in the fog
during a landing attempt at the Toronto City Centre Airport.
This morning I see in the newspaper that the plane and the pilot have been
located at the bottom of Lake Ontario. The plane was a Beechcraft that could
seat six...

You might want to also check out gyroplanes. NZ has a new one

Weight of a Harley Evo / Twin-cam 88 for aircraft? by
Wright1902Glider
Anyone know what this type of engine weighs? I know that hog-air claims 200
lbs, but that's with a starter, PSRU (PRSU?), exhaust, etc. I'm wondering what
the engine itself weighs with its standard starter, and nothing else. Any
bikers in here have a spare engine and a scale?
My much-discussed...

FAR rules on "ground-effect" vehicles? by
Wright1902Glider
Does anyone here know if / what-section-of FAR rules govern the operation of
"ground effect" vehicles? Specifically, how high can a machine fly AGL before
its technically classified as an aircraft and not a hovercraft,
hydroplane-boat, Ecronoplan, etc.? Is there a loophole for a powered...

Suitable coating for spring-steel wire? by
Wright1902Glider
This will be an odd request since solid-strand spring steel wire hasn't been
used in a/c for nearly 80 years. Here goes:
I'm using 15ga. solid-strand spring steel wire in my Wright 1902 glider. It
was shipped with an oil-coating that held up for a few months. Problem is that
the oil did not...

Props and Wing Warping... was soaring vs. flaping by
Wright1902Glider
Not wanting to post at the end of a mile-long thread, I'm starting a new one
(so sue me.) Here are a few clarifications regarding the Wrights, wing
warping, and ancient props, from a guy currently nursing a deep thigh bruise
inflicted by the hip cradle of a Wright 1902 glider.
Props first: Nope...

Looking for out of service main rotor blades for testing new rotor by
Wright1902Glider
Have you tried contacting one of the commercial companies like Petroleum
Helicopters or Air Logistics? Both of them are located in (or near) Lafayette,
LA. If the blades from a Bell 206 would be of use to you, they might be able
to help. Otherwise, you might also try Barnstormers.com...
