Obtaining IFR clearances in Canada by
Andrew Sarangan
How do you get clearances from a non-towered field in Canada? Do they use
RCO/GCO or void-times like in the US? Are pop-up clearances used?

help me find Sydney's list? by
Dave Butler
A while ago on this newsgroup, Sydney Hoeltzli (I'm pretty sure that's who it
was) posted a list of IFR-GPS tasks that one ought to be able to do before
considering oneself competent in the use of that GPS.
I'd sure like to have that list, as I'm checking myself out on a plane with a
GPS I haven't...

why ADF/DME for LCI ILS 8? by
Gary Drescher
The LCI ILS 8 approach plate says ADF or DME is required. But all the
necessary fixes (including the MAHWP) can be identified by the VORs, ILS,
and OM. So why the requirement for ADF or DME?

172P vs 172R for instrument platform..... by
Jonathan
I currently rent a 172P for all of my flying needs. The FBO that I
rent at is getting a 172R. My question is what is everyones openion
of the 172R as an instrument platform? I know it should fly about like
the 172P. I am wondering about the systems and any added safety
features.
One thing that...

Instrument Checkride by
G KRYSPIN
I passed my instrument checkride on the first attempt, 9 YEARS after I began my
instrument training. The training was interrupted by a move to NJ and a new
job. The examiner was Wally Moran, a retired TWA captain with 18,000 hours in
his logbook. My instructor and I flew from Westchester, NY (HPN)...

Time for certificate issuance? by
Jeremy Lew
I passed my IA checkride on April 17th, and still haven't received my
newfangled plastic certificate. The FAA airmen database lists the rating,
so I know they're aware of it. The DE gave me a temporary certificate which
expires in less than a month, what should I do assuming it doesn't come
soon?...

Cockpit weather display question by
Chip Jones
OK, so there I was, training one of our scarce "newbie" controllers at ZTL
yesterday. There was a lot of convective weather and we were busy busy busy
trying to keep people from killing each other in the saddles and holes
between the storms. Anyway, as usual when I am training someone and...

Computer STAR/SID names by
K. Ari Krupnikov
What is the significance of the first portion of a computer name for a
STAR, such as PXN.COMMO1 which is called COMMO ONE ARRIVAL into
Oakland? Is there a connection to Panoche VOR (PXN)? Should one read
the name as "commo one arrival, Panoche transition"?
Ari.

KSFO ATIS: "FG IN GAP W" by
David Ziemba
During the summer months, during which the stratus sits off the
Northern California coast threatening to move inland, the KSFO ATIS
frequently contains a comment that reads "FG IN GAP W". Via empirical
observation, I'm assuming that this means that there's fog in the gap
between the hills due west...

Meigs Class D Airspace by
Defly
previous threads about Meigs Class D. I called my local FSDO (Grand
Rapids, MI) who had no idea why the Class D is still depicted on the Chicago
Sectional, and suggested I call NACO. I did and left a message. I got a call
back this AM from Tony Selve at Naco who says the airspace will not be...

Instrument checkride (long) by
Vitaly Shmatikov
I've been lurking here for a while, and I thought I'd share my
experiences on the instrument checkride today, as they may be useful
to someone. This was my 1st attempt (I did an unofficial evaluation
checkride with the examiner a few days prior). I fly a Cessna
172S out of PAO. My examiner today...

Legend for Jepp Charts by
CB
Anyone know where on the web I can get hold of the legend for the Jepp low
level enroute charts.
Unlike the NACO charts the Jepp charts don't have the legend on the charts.
Having used the NACO for the written, I wanted to evaluate the Jepps by
comparing them with the NACOs.
I have a couple of...

thought? I heard...
