Hello all, I have a Compaq Ipaq with a GPS Unit and I'm look for some advice on mapping software to use with it for aviation use. I already have a GPS Map 196 and am looking to use the Ipaq as a back up or possibly more of a planning tool. I'd like to here from those that are using a Pocket PC and...

Introducing my dog to the plane by Michael 182
I have a 9 month old yellow lab. Very well trained - come, sit, stay, down, fetch, drop, heel, crate, etc. Loves the car, jumps right in. Want to start taking him on flights with me. Any comments on introducing him to the plane? Thanks, Michael

Three more newbie Qs, if you don't mind :) by Ramapriya
Hi all, I'm encouraged by your non-disparaging response to my first posting here yesterday. I have a few more Qs that will look utterly idiotic to you guys -- but remember that I'm not a pilot :) 1. Is there a way of mathematically justifying the dictum that a successful takeoff is guaranteed if...

Garmin 430 Reception by Jon Kraus
Our "new" '79 M20J came with a 2 year old Garmin 430 GPS and Garmin 340 audio panel. The backup radio is an ancient King 170B. I must say that the reception on the Garmin sucks compared to the 170B. Am I doing something wrong or is this just something I have to live with? To me for 10 grand the...

ANTHRAX IN A CAN by Cribsheet
ANTHRAX IN A CAN When a lone terrorist can raise havoc in a city with a Coke can full of anthrax it's time to rethink our policies. Over eight million 40x8x8 foot containers enter our ports annually and less than six percent are inspected. It only takes one container to conceal weapons that...

PDA GPS: Anywhere Map vs. NavGPS Pro vs ?? by C Kingsbury
OK, y'all are probably getting sick of all my GPS questions these days but I'll go to the well one more time. I may or may not get a panel-mount IFR GPS for my 172, that's a separate issue. Decided I want a portable GPS to use as a backup and for sit. awareness in IMC. Also decided I want...

Election results may bring good change to aviation by Corky Scott
I did not vote for Bush, and so consider his re-election a catastrophe in many ways, however there is some good news. AVWeb has just posted the following: Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska is taking over the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, which they explained sets policy for the FAA,...

F-16 Fires on Elementary School by Dean Wilkinson
NEW YORK (Reuters) - A National Guard F-16 fighter plane mistakenly fired off 25 rounds of ammunition at the Little Egg Harbor Intermediate School in South New Jersey on Wednesday night. The pilot was meant to fire the rounds some 3 1/2 miles away at a military target range, Lt. Col. Roberta Niedt...

Naked Man Runs After Qantas Jet by nobody

FAA going to crap by BuzzBoy
I got a good friend who works for the FAA at a major airport. He told me the experienced controllers and technicians are retiring and leaving by the dozens and the only thing they are hiring are black females and people who are basically unqualified and stupid. Now that's scary. I never thought the...

Comprehensive security by Roger Long
I watched the webcast of the TSA chief's meeting with AOPA. I found myself going back and forth over his responses to the questions. Why you have to prove your citizenship to get a glider rating but not to rent a 14 ton truck? Why can't foreign pilots who fly 747's into and over Alaska do seaplane...

Switching instructors? by Dave Jacobowitz
Here's a question for the group: I've got a flight instructor that I work well with. I finished my private with him and did my entire instrument rating with him. I want to start on my commercial (SE, and then CFI, CFII, and later ME) and was wondering if there is any good reason to look for someone...

how can you get live METAR data ? by Bravo
For you computer savvy folks in the newsgroup..... if I wanted to build a web page for my airport that provided live METAR data, where could I get the data from ? I see that the NWS web site has free software for decoding the METAR codes, but where and how do you get the current weather data ? ...

Descending prior to the VDP? by MH
It's my understanding that if an instrument approach includes a VDP, you should not descend below the MDA prior to reaching this point. If you're not equipped to identify the VDP you should fly the approach as if no VDP is provided. I've been told you're not _authorized_ to descend prior the VDP...

Required IFR Radios by Bill Denton
If I am reading FAR 91.205 (d) (2) correctly, you only need one COMM radio and one navigation radio (of some type) for IFR operation. If this is correct, how do you stay in contact with ATC while picking up ATIS, etc? Are you allowed to request a frequency change, then come back to ATC? Thanks!
