ATC mutiny brewing by
Password
A mutiny is brewing amongst FAA employees and in the Air
Traffic system. Buckle your seat belts pilots it's going to
get rough
Ex-NATCA President tells all
I was recently asked to write a book to chronicle the six
years of my NATCA Presidency. I am ambivalent about the
project. I have...

Parallel Track function in GPS? by
Roy Smith
Yesterday I played with the parallel track function in the CNX-80 for
the first time. I was introducing the CNX-80 to a student and I had
planned a VFR flight via airways. My student (rightfully) questioned
the wisdom of an over-water segment, so we decided to fly that segment
on a 5-mile offset...

Unclear Clearance by
Travis Marlatte
This didn't cause any problems other than some additional radio traffic but
it caught me off guard. Let me know what you think...
I flew PWK (just north of O'Hare) to D95 (Lapeer just east of Flint,
Michigan). Went VFR across the lake but then encountered reduced vis and
lowering ceilings so I...

Chicago VFR throughway by
Stuart King
Chicagoans...please advise ...
What about flying from North to South along the shore.
Then cross between Midway and O'Hare at 1500MSL.
Then continue south, after flipping the bird to Mayor Dick Daley.
Is this the way, or is there something like the Hudson river VFR corridor ?

Mounting a turn coordinator on the tail? by
Tim Auckland
(Things are so slow in this group at the moment, I thought I'd post
this to get your input on something I've been mulling over...)
If you put a plane into a skidding left turn (wings level) with left
rudder, the ball on the panel goes to the right.
However, I've been trying to work out what would...

IFR checkride in IMC: PASSED! by
gatt
When the weather is bad and the examiner gives you the option of delaying
for better weather, don't say "Well, if I can't pass my checkride in IMC I'm
probably not qualified for the IFR rating."
First attempt at the checkride. Icing forecast at 6,000. Examiner said
"No problem. We probably...

GNS430 Without the IAF by
Jerry
Hello,
Here's a situation that keeps coming up: I'm coming home to SQL
and want to fly the GPS30
approach. Like many GPS approaches, this one looks like the letter
"L". The corner of the L
is AMEBY, and 5 miles later after that is the FAF, CUZUP.
AMEBY is not an IAF, but that doesn't stop...

Instrument Rating Checkride PASSED (Very Long) by
Alan Pendley
Instrument Rating Checkride PASSED
After many months of study and training, I flew my Instrument rating
checkride on 10 December 2004, and passed! What a relief! I am now the
proud recipient of a Temporary Airman's Certificate with an Instrument
Airplane rating.

Hold direct entry and speed in Skyhawk by
Terence Wilson
Hello,
A couple of quick questions/calrifications:
1) When executing a direct entry to a hold e.g. for the KAPC LOC Rwy
36L missed:
"...climb 3000' direct SGD VOR & hold"
I have been flying directly to the VOR then, upon watching the to/from

Garmin 530 WAAS upgrade - what's involved? by
Paul Tomblin
We recently put a 530 in one of our planes. Garmin says the upgrade to
WAAS is only going to be $1500. Sure, that's what they charge for the
guts, but what is this likely to run to once the shop starts adding their
labour costs, etc. Is another field approval needed, or what sort of
paper...

How Quickly Things Can Turn! by
three-eight-hotel
This, by no means is as exciting or interesting as some of the other
threads I have followed, but serves as a constant reminder to me, how
quickly things can change!
Wanting to get my plane down to Cameron Park before Feb 1. for an
annual, I determined that yesterday was probably my best...

Filing direct with GPS by
pgbnh
The installation of the GNS530 is complete. The learning is just begun. But
since I now have equipment which allows it, what is the likelihood of
receiving 'cleared as filed' if I file direct to a destination a few hundred
miles away?
Is this not what 'Free Flight' was supposed to be about?
Is it...

NDB IAPs... going... gone by
[email protected]
I got a much thicker than usual packet from Jeppesen yesterday, and the
bulk of the changes were the removal of dozens of NDB IAPs. I had heard
that the FAA was looking to decomission a lot of "redundant" NDB
appoaches, but was surprised to see that they were really gone so soon.
I guess there's...

Substitute DME for GPS? by
Thomas Borchert
Hi all,
a question that has probably been asked before, but I couldn't find it
in Google:
Is it allowed to use an IFR-approach-certified GPS instead of a DME in
a LOC-DME or VOR-DME approach that does not have a GPS-overlay?
Thanks!

Logging PIC time as student instrument pilot in IMC by
Greg Esres
I recently realized that I should not have included any "actual"
(IMC) time recorded in my logbook as PIC time while I was an
instrument student.
Why not? If you were actual, then it was PIC.
how about adding a "corrective" (new) entry?
That's what I do. Just make +/- entries to total...
