A good 12 hour soaring forecast goes bad by
Jonathan Gere
Good weather on the 12 hour forecast became bad weather on the 9 hour
forecast. Even worse in the cockpit. See the forecast maps.
http://www.geocities.com/jgere34/12hrforecast.doc (167kB)
It's enough to make me wish for validation statistics on soaring
forecasts of various durations.

A good article - for another sport by
tienshanman
I just noticed this article in the NY times:
http://travel.nytimes.com/2009/09/18/travel/escapes/18hang.html?hpw
When I saw this title I thought, great, an article about soaring. Finally some large scale publicity via a reputable paper. But no, the article is about hang gliding. Now, I have...

Freedom's Wings Canada, a charitable collaborative that offers rides and
instruction to the disabled community, was in Ottawa at the Gatineau Gliding

after some hesitation, agreed. Here is the account of her day she sent...

Having fun in the DuckHawk 15m sailplane
By: Daniel Sazhin
In early September, I had a fantastic day of flying at Blairstown Airport, the culmination of which was having the opportunity to fly Windward Performance's new DuckHawk. I had just flown the club Grob Twin Astir with my brother, promptly...

A Lady Gone West by
Burt Compton - Marfa Gliders, west Texas

Georgie Lee Kahl passed this week at age 92, in her home in Marfa, Texas, with members of her family by her side. Along with her husband C.M. "Fritz" Kahl she was a significant part of welcoming glider pilots and soaring events to Marfa in southwest Texas beginning in 1960. The...

a Li-Ion in a lead acid world. by
brianDG303[_2_]
I’ve been experimenting around with Li-Ion batteries for a few months
now, just for fun, and thought I would pass on a few observations that
might be interesting. I only experimented with Li-Ions that had a
separate printed circuit board incorporated into each cell, and I was
not able to ignite...

A little charity? by
Bruce
Hi All
There is a movement underway to get soaring re-setablished in Bosnia.
Apparently some club trainers (Blanik L13s I understand)have been
recovered from the unlawful.
Regrettably they have been stripped of instruments. So the question is -
if you have old but usable instruments in the box...

A little off topic by
Fred Blair
I know this is not a glider question, but it is for a gliderport.
Does anyone know of any pipe other than metal that can withstand 150 psi for
a paint booth application.
I need to run 300 ft. from the compressor to the booth.
Thanks,
Fred

A little off topic...but needed to vent on this by
Stewart Kissel
http://www.dailyrecord.com/news/articles/news2-laser.htm
This kinda stuff drives me nuts....
When people are either to ignorant, or think they can
get away with something, that is not okay.
'Hey dad, lets go shine the laser at some more planes
tonight, sure is fun'

They came to Uvalde during the recent contest. Good people showing good stuff in Texas. Every state should have a team doing segments like these!

A Little Technology Humor (SPOT) by
V1
I was reading the details in my SPOT user manual. In the Operation
Conditions And Climate section, it lists multiple potential issues,
including:
- If you exceed 700 mph (Mach 1) GPS accuracy degrades
Ahhh, OK - I'll keep that in mind ....

A Motoglider 'Landing Fumes' by
Tom BravoMike
New from FAA on YouTube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BV2yT1Dcdw
Don't know exactly the situation, so I am not making any judgement, just mixed feelings. So, after all, are motorgliders gliders, or not? Most outlandings would be 'No fuel, no engine' declaration.

A national glider transponder code? Not so fast!! by
Phil Umphres
A national glider transponder code? Not so fast!!
For many years, SSA has been asking the FAA to establish a single
transponder code to be used by gliders nationwide when they were in
VFR flight and not in radio contact with air traffic control. It is
our belief that the assignment of a discrete...
