Landing Lights at NAPA by
Jay Honeck
In discussing our relatively new Skycraft landing lights (the
cut-into-the-leading-edge-of-the-wings type) here the other day, I noted
that I had just burned out a GE 4509 after around 35 hours. This surprised
me, since, being out in the wing, I expected there to be less
filament-killing...

Citabria Fuel-Flow Problem by
quietguy
The A/C in question is a 1974 Bellanca 7ECA, re-engined with an O-320
so it's effectively a 7GCAA. It belongs to the Offutt AFB Aero Club
and has seen very little use, often sitting for weeks at a time until
a week ago when I began taking dual in it 2-3 times a week to get my
tailwheel...

Least Expensive Plane To Buy and Own by
Michael Adams
I am looking for some input on the least expensive airplanes to own. I've
heard so many horror stories about the $5000 or even $15,000 annual, or the
seat adjuster that costs $600, that I thought I would get some input on this
before buying. So I'm looking for low purchase price (used), low...

Removing oil galley plug by
Jim Burns
For those who have installed oil temp probes in the forward oil galley of
their Lycoming engines, how did you or your A&P remove the 1/8" NTP plug?
I've got one that is stuck tight and I don't want to booger anything up
trying to get it out. I've heard horror stories of people having to drill
them...

This year's annual by
A Lieberma
It's been a solid week, and I am still not flying in my Sundowner.....
Problems encountered.
Oil analysis came back with high count of copper
#3 cylinder low on compressions
Corrosion on a side panel of the fuselage
Small pipe (Exhaust outake?) had small crack in it
Air in the brake lines (took...

TIS (traffic information service) by
[email protected]
We have had TIS in three of the planes in our partnership for a while
now. I consider it a safety of flight issue. When it is working the
number of unseen planes around you it displays is amazing. I really
don't want to fly without it at this point. Unfortunately is seems
that the data is not...

CHTs - What is acceptable? by
TripFarmer
What is an acceptable CHT in cruise? How hot can one stay in extended cruise
flight? I've got 6 new ones and want to take care of them.
Thanks in advance.

Downloading Flying Music by
Jay Honeck
We've got the PS Engineering CD/Intercom in our plane, and listen to CDs on
long trips.
I am obviously slipping into "dinosaur" status, as I have never downloaded
music, for "burning" onto a blank CD. I *have* burned CDs, but I've always
done it from tracks played off of another CD.
Does anyone...

Flying under Class B by
PaulaJay1
What is the minimum legal distance (altitude) to fly VFR under a Class B
"wedding cake"? CLE has a 1900 ft floor at the north side by Lake Erie and I
have flown at 1800 to go around CLE. I was not talking to CLE so I don't know
if they objected. Today I was coming around CLE decending IFR. When...

Landing a Mooney by
Jon Kraus
We just purchased a'79 M20J 4443H. I am in the middle of getting my 10
hours with a CFI for Insurance purposes and I have to tell you that this
thing is a lot different to land than a Skyhawk. So far I am glad that
my CFI has been with me because 75 percent of the landings have not been
pretty....

Aircraft certification questions. by
psyshrike
Howdy,
How does FAA type certification relate to intellectual property
rights? For example: everything in an O-235 has been out of patent for
years now. Same with old aircraft designs. Is there any reason why
somebody couldn't tool up and start ripping out O-235s, and selling
them new?
I ask...

Garmin 396 'installation' in the Maule by
Maule Driver
Well, it came yesterday. Great box. Looks like the challenge will be
'mounting' the GXM 30 XM antenna in the Maule.
The thing has a big non-removeable magnet so distance from the compass
is needed. It has an extension cord and mounting screws but needs good
sky exposure... any thoughts are...

Save your back, air up your tires by
Ben Jackson
Last Wednesday I found myself unable to push my plane back into the
hangar without help. It was wet, limiting my shoe traction, and I had
been unable to successfully get back on the concrete pad after cutting
the corner through the squishy grass, forcing me to take a more
straight-in (and more...

Atlas is down... by
Jay Honeck
No, not *that* down...
Had my A&P install my new whiz-bang Iridium fine wire plugs yesterday, and
sent him on a chase for that pesky oil leak.
So what did he find? A cracked exhaust pipe, right at the weld in the
"gatherer" (where the three pipes come together).
Then, when we pulled the thing...

Jim Burns is An Old Man Today by

Ahem. (tap-tap-tap --- Is this thing on...?)
Just an FYI to all of you rec.aviation regulars out the Jim Burns turns
the big FOUR-OH today, in Steven's Point, WI, U.S.A.
(His wife, Tami, promised him that we'd keep it quiet...)

Unfortunately, 1/8 mile vis with freezing rain and snow...

Private Pilot Uniforms by
Frank[_11_]
I am anticipating getting my private certificate in the not-too-distant future. I know this may sound like a real dorky thing to some people, which is why I am reluctant to ask my instructor, but I was thinking about getting a uniform.
I do not want to do anything against any "protocol", nor...

Bush, Kerry, Airplanes by
Sam Byrams
All this brings up several things.
One, Bush learned to fly in the military at government expense, did
not complete his assigned commitment, and flew, if I understand ,
fourteen months after UPT and has not flown as PIC or SIC since.
Neither military or elsewise. (Not counting the ride out to the...

Mooney drops into my backyard by

This has special interest for me because I own a Mooney (that should
take care of the on-topicness). I guess I could put this in
r.a.piloting, but i don't know anyone over there, and I just wanted to
share this with some friends...
About 3:00 this afternoon, a Mooney M20M dropped out of a low...

More plane ownership? by
Dave Covert
This is something that has puzzled me for a while...
I (a private pilot) work in the pleasure marine industry and have noticed
that almost anyone who wants to own a boat does own a boat. Now, some boats
are indeed pretty cheap, but a $20,000 boat is fairly common (approx cost of
a 150?). Here in...
