Wintertime and navigation... by
BobW
So it's wintertime in the northern hemisphere (short days/long nights), and on
a recent thread it's (yet again) been implied out how crucial GPS is to
routine navigation (you're doomed without it), and part of
increasingly-geezeristic me gazes back fondly upon those forever-vanished days
when...

Oximeters that are Sunlight Readable? by
John DeRosa OHM Ω http://aviation.derosaweb.net
Being a flat-lander I want to monitor my O2 blood saturation level during high altitude flights. I own one of the inexpensive OLED fingertip pulse oximeters ("Pulse OX") devices which works but for several annoying things;
1) It's finicky fingertip fitting makes it nearly impossible to keep...

Canopy jetison not. by
Jonathan St. Cloud
Thought I would share an interesting experience from this weekend flying rides. Most Sundays I fly rides at the local glider FBO. My last ride of the day was a former military air traffic controller. When giving her the safety briefing I clearly explained the jettison handle, and canopy release...

1-34 Fuselage Drain Holes by
vontresc
Our club 1-34 lives outside, and during heavy rains will accumulate some water in the fuselage. There appear to be no drain holes in the bottom of the fuselage. Is there supposed to be a drain in there?
If not is there an approved method of adding these?

Emergencies on aerotow by
[email protected]
You cannot teach safety in paragraph-long sound bites.
Unlike a high percentage of glider pilots, if you want to be a safe pilot, you need to educate yourself.
How many launching emergencies are there? All pilots automatically think of rope breaks. Believe it or not, 41 emergencies are listed,...

Filser ATR-500 by
Roger Fowler
I am thinking of buying a Filser ATR-500 comm radio
for our club. Does anyone have any experience with
it, especially reliability and repair-wise?
I like the idea that it just plugs in where the previous
ATR-57 was. But I am concerned because the ATR-57
has to go back to the factory for repair...

This and That by
Ray Lovinggood
Two questions:
1. As I load my car for a trip to the airfield for
one day of flying, I wonder how the families loaded
up for a week or two of competition, back in the day
when families went to the competition. From the book
about Dick Schreder, written by his daughter (an EXCELLENT
book, by the...

Baro/GPS disagreement by
[email protected]
I'm a little baffled at the huge difference between my GPS altitude
and the pressure altitude when I get up high. Yesterday on the
ground, I showed around 10 feet difference between the GPS altitude
and the pressure altitude. Up around 17000 feet, the GPS indicates
over 1000' higher. I also noted...
