new tow plane/tow hitch by
jim
We want to install a tow hitch on a recently acquired Husky in
preparation for the contest season. Is a Tost hitch required or
preferred for SSA sanctioned events? Is the venerable Schweitzer
hitch still OK ? If so, for how long? Tost is the standard in
Europe. Is the US moving toward that...

Komet trailer painting by

What are the best procedures and materials for painting the fiberglass
top on a Komet trailer? Prep? Primer? Urethane? Epoxy? Auto body
shop? Aircraft paint shop?

Harder to stall in a steep turn? by
Jim
In his book Gliding, p100, Derek Piggott writes:
"In most modern gliders, the elevator power is not adequate to pull
the wing beyond the stalling angle in a steep bank and it is only just
possible to reach the pre-stall buffet with the stick right back.
This is very different from straight flight...

Used European Sailplane For U.S. Delivery? by
Jim
I've read archived RAS threads; Terry Joint used to arrange Euro purchases
for U.S. delivery back in 2002. His e-mail is broken now. The USD keeps
declining & registration & shipping costs both in $$ & time might make this
route undesirable.Yet?
I'm looking for a first glass ship with an XL sized...

How about the HP-18 (rather than KA-6CR)? by
Jim
Thanks to all KA-6 pilots responding to my earlier question.
Wayne Paul has kindly sent links to HP websites, suggesting the HP-18 as an
affordable option for the economically-minded flyer. Compared to the wooden
KA-6, the HP-18 has a larger cockpit, is made of metal, structural foam,
composite &...

What do you think of KA 6CR? by
Jim
I'm looking for an inexpensive sailplane & see a few KA 6CR's for sale, all
including enclosed trailer for around $7,000. A 1-26 would have been OK, but
there aren't any right now. I'm not sure I'd fit in a KA 6 at 6'3" & over
200 lb. Also; how about maintaining a wooden sailplane? Does one need to...

Sammy Mason on Stalling & Spinning by
Jim
Many descriptions have been posted here in several threads on spinning
over the last couple of weeks and I have found all of them to be
fascinating. I've been prompted to think through again my own
understanding of the stall and the spin in gliders.
One description that has been strongly asserted...

String in the middle does not protect you from a spin by
Jim
I think the recent threads on spinning have been wonderful. I find
them a great help to focusing on such an important issue.
Somewhere in my dark student-pilot experiences I was shown that
coordinated flight, with the yaw string kept carefully in the middle,
does not guarantee against spin entry....

VNE and the "coffin corner"? by
Jim
Still thinking about VNE and whether it is usually stated as a TAS
rather than an IAS (one must read the POH to be sure, of course).
I've gotten the notion, probably from comments I've not understood
very well, that the "coffin corner" is the intersection of stall speed
as an IAS indication on the...

Dr Jack's BLIPMAPS by
Jim
I came across Dr Jack's BLIPMAP forecast page
http://www.drjack.net/BLIPMAP/NE/index.html
Probably a lot of good information if you know how to use it (and some very
pretty maps), but also not exactly intuitive and slightly overwhelming.
Anybody find good use of this material, and in an orderly...

Constant speed or constant attitude? by
Jim
I would like to hear what other glider pilots have found to be helpful
in trying to center thermals.
It is common in gliding books to read that a constant diameter circle,
as a product of flying a constant airspeed and a constant bank, is
important in centering thermals. If the airspeed and / or...

I want a PZL K-13 compass by
Jim Archer
Before I buy a new one, I'm wondering if anyone has one in good condition
for our Kestrel. We have the mount, the housing (yes, the actual compass)
shattered and I found it on the cockpit floor. Yes, possibly an overfill
issue, read about that on here recently. The glider came from a...

SN-10b EW flight recorder/PDA combination by
Jim Archer
Is anyone driving their SN-10b with an EW flight recorder? I'd like to go
with this combination, and possibly add a PDA as well.
I think I want it because it allows me to not bring a laptop to the
airport, I have a partner and we can each have our own SD card and don't
have to hassle with...

Wanted: Dittel FSG 71M by
jim archer
I'm looking for this exact model. My FSG 71M is going to the shop for
repair. I'm foreseeing that it is going to take too long and I'd
rather not fly all season with my handheld waiting for it to be
repaired. I want to be able to plug and play, i.e. use the same
connections and mic that are...

Missing Glider #2 by
jim archer
Presumably somebody came and picked up the Ventus 2 that I was
flying? It was parked outside the fence, on a public street, at my
local airport for the last few weeks. Some notice would have been
appreciated, the conditions were quite good the other day and I had a
badge flight planned

Where to buy good value glider trailer tires by
jim archer
I went to a popular western US tire shop and they quoted me $175 for
two 13" tires. I didn't buy them. Surely I can get good tires for
less than that somewhere? If so please specify brand and type. I do
drag the glider a couple thousand miles each summer so I don't want
cheapest, just good...
