Filing through Dallas what to expect? by
Nicholas Kliewer
Being a freshly minted IFR pilot -- I am taking a
trip from Dallas to Phoenix for Thanksgiving.
I've got most of the trip figured out, my first
stop is Abilene, but I am wondering about getting
across Dallas:
If I filed TKI (McKinney) direct ABI (Abilene)
what would I get?

Can GPS be *too* accurate? Do I need some XTE?? by
Icebound
In the "good old" VOR days, it must have been pretty difficult to fly down
the centerline of an airway (or of any direct track).
So an eastbound VFR/IFR aircraft descending from 7500/7000 to his
destination, was more than likely to avoid traffic... on the reciprocal
track passing him by at 6500 or...

to HSI or not to HSI by
Dave Butler
Please excuse the hijacking of this religious/political forum to raise a
question about flying.
My partners and I are faced with a decision. What would you do?
We plan to update our outdated panel with a GNS480. The CDIs currently installed
are not compatible with the GNS480, so one of them will...

What is the deal with tapes? by
Dave Jacobowitz
Okay, I've been watching the transition to glass cockpits
in GA aircraft.
Clearly, the cost savings and simplification that comes from
integration is neat, and the reliability of an all-electrical
system is (probably) going to mean more safety for all of us.
But one thing bugs me -- the tapes.
I...

Obstacle Clearance Altitude / Height by
Tim
Hi,
Could anyone give me a good explanation for OCA/OCH. I know it has
something to do with the minimums of ILS-approaches and it should
always be lower than or equal to the DA/DH. I assume it provides you
with a certain obstacle clearance at DA/DH. But how is it
determined????
Best regards,

I can teach anyone how to get what they want out of life. by

clearance delivery question by
PaulH
If I file an IFR flight plan 2 hours in advance from departure from a
towered airport and then leave really early or really late:
1. Is the FP normally available to my local tower about half an hour
after filing?
2. How long does it remain in the "system" if I get delayed?

new instrument PTS by

Is there an examiner on board that can summarize the significant
changes in the new PTS?
For example, is the GPS required to be turned off during one of the
approaches?

Clarification of the KMTV GPS-30/LOC-30 Approaches?? by
Icebound
A couple of clarifications, please, for the IFR-challenged...
1. Is there a good reason for the holding point for the GPS approach to 30,
to be back 11.8 miles back from the holding point for the LOC approach?
They have established UBWAY right at the marker, so why do they not let the
GPS...

VFR to IFR Cost for KLN 89B by
Skip Guimond
I recently purchased an aircraft with a KLN 89B installed with VFR
restrictions. Can anyone give me a "guesstimate" on the cost of
adding the necessary equipment and labor to have the unit certified
for IFR flight?
Thanks--

GPS Handheld by

Hello,
I, have a question about using a handheld GPS as a backup/situational
awareness tool during IFR flight: is there a handheld on the market that has
(apart from nav aids and intersections) any IFR-related navigational
infomation (routes, SID's, STAR's) in it's database?
Thanks in advance for...

Oral Exam Prep -- recommendations and recollections by
Nicholas Kliewer
I have bought (and been studying) the ASA
"Instrument Oral Exam Guide" by Hayes.
Can somebody recommend another one?
Also, what questions do you remember being
asked on your oral exam?
Thanks y'all! Reading this group has been a
real blessing. I am learning a lot!

Proposal: use OT (off topic) by
Scott Moore
Please I would like to propose:
Off topic posters please include OT at the front of your message. Some
of us want to talk about IFR here, since, after all, that is the subject
of the group. And I would like to filter out the off topic posts.
Please. If you respect this group.

HVN VOR-A -- why such a high MDA? by
Roy Smith
The VOR-A at New Haven
(http://www.myairplane.com/databases/approach/pdfs/00671VG2.PDF) has an
MDA of 720, which is about 300 feet higher than the towers in the area.
The VOR-2
(http://www.myairplane.com/databases/approach/pdfs/00671VG2.PDF) gets
you down to 380, and has to deal with the same...

Terrain-Aware Handheld vs. IFR GPS? by
C Kingsbury
OK, here's a new take on an old debate:
I fly a 172 with 2 good NAV/COMs, an M1 Loran and a flaky ADF in the
Northeast US. Since everything up here is airways and most of the fields I
go to have an ILS or LOC approach, this is enough to get away with on most
of the flights I take. This is the...
