Whidbey Island Survival School by JD
When I was in the P3 community (VP31), I was sent to NUW for Survival School. I forget how long it lasted, but I recall the "ogre muthas" giving us a time or two. It was cold and wet (February) and I recall they bused us out to some mountain for snow survival. I have no idea where the...

LCACs and tsunami support? by Mike Bandor
Do we have any LCACs supporting the relief efforts? I would think that the LCACs would be suited very well to handle part of the task of getting supplies on-shore (no need for an airstrip or port deep enough -- or still functioning). Just curious. Mike

Emergency swimming ascent from a disabled sub by Jack
If a sub sinks in the ocean, I assume the sailors can escape by swimming to the surface. But what is the maximum depth that a person could do an emergency swimming ascent from a disabled sub?

The RAAF did have 19 P-3C Orions, 18 of which have been modified to AP-3C standard. The 19th aircraft, a trials platform, was not modified to AP-3C and remains being a P-3C. Does anyone know which RAAF P-3C is this odd one out? Regards, Marco P.J. Borst P-3 Orion Research Group - The...

Harrier vs. JSF-35 by Merlin
The JSF will be very late and very expensive. The British have not even started to build the Aircraft Carrier yet that it is supposed to operate from ! It is a pity that the Harrier was not developed further ? An 'Invincible' Class carrier with Harriers and Osprey AEW is probably the way to go...

USS John F. Kennedy to be retired in 2005 by [email protected]
I am afraid reducing the number of aircraft carriers might quickly result in decreasing the number of active Carrier Air Wings also. JFK, anyhow, has already escaped the axe before, when it became a "training and reserve carrier"... That may give us a glimpse how the Navy may look like in ten...

Have you ever seen a C-130 Hercules trying to do a hover over the runway ? by Iwan Bogels
Check out http://www.dappa.nl/crash.htm This video is about a (then) highly classified project to land a C-130 at a soccer field, and get it back airborne from the same field with even more load than during landing. The landing test caused the Herc to virtually hover over the site, and the video...

Single-seat torpedo planes post-WW2 by KDR
Just wondering how come post-WW2 carrierborne torpedo planes such as Firebrand, AM Mauler, Wyvern were all single-seaters. Only a few years ago during the WW2, carrierborne torpedo planes required three crews - pilot, bomber/navigator & radioman/gunner - without exception. What brought this change?
