Using a tablet PC when airborne? by
john smith
It gets real interesting when you are bouncing around in turbulence.
I have an Apple Newton 2100 that I have used to record flight
information on. The Newton is kneeboard size.

Localizer front/back course and reverse sensing by
Mark Hansen
During my instrument training, I learned that I would have "normal"
CDI sensing whether flying in the localizer front course or out the
back course.
However, At our local International airport (Sacramento, CA), one
of the runways (16R/34L) has an ILS on both 16R and 34L, although
the ILS for 34L...

Safety Pilot by

Does a safety pilot have to have a current medical and be current as far
as landings go, or just be rated in the category/class being flown?

Cringely on airborne internet access by
Dave Butler
War Flying: Bob wants to put WiFi in the Sky, By Robert X. Cringely
http://www.pbs.org/cringely/pulpit/pulpit20040715.html
He proposes a 1,000-node aerial mesh network for wireless internet access for
general aviation airplanes (and others, including ground-based users, actually).
I hope someone...

Aircraft Designations by
David Townend
The second printing of "Military Aircraft Designations and Systems" is still
available. We were out of print soon after our October 2002 printing so it
is good to have copies available again. We are also able to hold the
original price, too. Military Aircraft designations
catalogued from 1913 to...

Trouble filing IFR to Canadian Airports by
Andrew Sarangan
I've made this flight many times before and never encountered this
before. I filed from my home airport (MGY) to PT(which is an NDB) to
CYKZ using DUATS. Everything went fine. When I called for my
clearance, they didn't have anything on me. So I departed VFR, and
tried calling again. Still no luck....

realign M-750 to reduce noise in Taiwan by

is my idea about realigning route M-750 to reduce
noise in Taiwan. I wonder how practical it is.

GPS for NDB IAF on ILS? by
Jim Burns
I don't have my AIM here at work, and I'm on dial up, so I won't attempt to
download it, but I'm looking at the ILS 32 into KMQY Smyrna TN. It says ADF
REQUIRED which I understand is to identify the IAF which is the SWZ NDB not
associated with a marker beacon, inside the outer marker. This is the...

new instrument PTS by

Is there an examiner on board that can summarize the significant
changes in the new PTS?
For example, is the GPS required to be turned off during one of the
approaches?

Say Again #51 by
[email protected]
I was just reading Don Brown's latest (6/22) on avweb:
http://www.avweb.com/news/columns/189944-1.html
This column is about NORDO IFR procedures. I like Don's columns and
find their nitpickiness to be consistent with safe flying, if a little
bit annoying.
But in this column, two things stuck out...

Computer STAR/SID names by
K. Ari Krupnikov
What is the significance of the first portion of a computer name for a
STAR, such as PXN.COMMO1 which is called COMMO ONE ARRIVAL into
Oakland? Is there a connection to Panoche VOR (PXN)? Should one read
the name as "commo one arrival, Panoche transition"?
Ari.

IFR to & from CLT - Delays and Fees to Expect by

I'm considering flying from ROA to CLT for a business meeting at the
airport itself next Tuesday -- arriving around noon and departing
around 16:00. I've not flown G/A to CLT before -- anyone able to
advise on the in/out delays (and fees) that I should expect? I'm
having a tough time justifying...

False glideslopes -- NZ60 by

An interesting thread on AirDisaster.com (including video) discusses
the false glideslope indications that nearly did in an Air New Zealand
flight some years ago. This is particularly interesting given that
the FAA no longer seems to require an outer marker or equivalent on
ILS approaches,...

Columns by a Canadian centre controller by

I have mixed feelings about Don Brown's columns on AvWeb -- sometimes I

Today, I stumbled by accident on a series of online columns by a Michael

Missing approach in Garmin 530 database by
Viperdoc
Today, I was flying with some friends for lunch at LRN, Lone Rock. The winds
were out of the west, and I had planned on doing the GPS 27 approach, which
was in my Jepp book and also printed out from the FAA chart.
However, when I tried to call it up on my 530 (with a current data card)...
