Airline Fuel question by
Peterpan
Delta announced today it will lose another 1 Billion dollars in 2005
Most of the US Airlines are losing money due to higher fuel cost's
In Europe, airlines are making money and the fuel is 3 times more expensive.
I don't get it.
Is it some new type of math the US airlines are using or have...

weather shorthand by
pgbnh
There was a time (probably right before I passed my Instrumenr written) when
I was pretty good at being able to read the shorthand used for weather
conditions, FA's, and the like. There was also a time when using shorthand
made sense - days of slow teletypes, limited memory, etc.
But does it...

Filing direct with GPS by
pgbnh
The installation of the GNS530 is complete. The learning is just begun. But
since I now have equipment which allows it, what is the likelihood of
receiving 'cleared as filed' if I file direct to a destination a few hundred
miles away?
Is this not what 'Free Flight' was supposed to be about?
Is it...

Full deflection = missed approach ??? by
pgbnh
It is common wisdom, and often common sense, that if a full deflection of a
CDI (or GS) is experienced, a missed approach is to be flown. But a lot of
people seem to think that it is REQUIRED. I have had a CFII tell me it is
required. But I can not find anything in FAR or AIM that states such...

IFR GPS by
pgbnh
Looking to upgrade the panel to include an IFR GPS. Are there really any
alternatives to Garmin? (either 430 or 480 or 530) (where alternative is
defined as comparable functionality for comparable price)?

GPS Altitude with WAAS by
Phil Verghese
I posted earlier about seeing differences of up to 500' between the
altitude shown on my Garmin GPS 196 (even while receiving WAAS) and my
altimeter. The GPS would consistently indicate higher than the
altimeter. Dan Luke suggested the cause might be non-standard
temperatures. After some more...

ANOTHER CURRENCY QUESTION by
philpoppins
Suppose your currency has lapsed. Say 7 months ago you did 3
approaches and then 3 months ago you did a hold, VOR tracking and 3
more approaches. Your currency has lapsed. Would flying 3 approaches
under the hood make you current, or since your currency has lapsed
would you have to do all 6 plus...

"center" or "approach" - why important by
[email protected]
In a recent flight, I received the handoff, "27D change to Chicago
Center on xxx.xx" Next call, "Chicago Center, Arrow 27D, 3000"
Response: "Arrow 27D, this is not Chicago Center, this is Chicago
Approach". Me "Arrow 27D, correction noted"
Is this an issue of sufficient importance to waste the...

Good Source For PIREPS? by
Phoenix Pilot
Anyone out there have any good web sources for up-to-date, textual
PIREPS? Multiple ones over a wide area would be a plus.
The only solid way I've found to get them is to log on to DUATS and do
a flight plan around the area I'm wanting to get PIREPs for. This is
time consuming, and I know theres...

Surface to Air Missile threat by

The FBI has arrested three men in connection with a plot to smuggle a
surface to air missile into the United States.
You do understand what a successful strike with a surface-to-air missile
would do, don't you? Not only would it kill the 100+ people who happened to
be on the targeted airliner, it...
