IVO props... comments.. by
Dave S
I am involved with the building of a velocity, and questions are flying
around about propeller choice. For in-flight adjustable, we are limited
at this time to an electric control, such as MT or IVO. Cost is pushing
our options in this area towards the IVO.
I have heard of some vibration/resonance...

DIY Two-Stroke Engine Construction Methods by
durabol[_2_]
The two main methods for homebuilt construction would be casting vs.
machining or some combination of both (probably the best option).
Forging probably isn't appropriate for home construction (either the
piston or connecting rod).
One method I have thought of is to produce a wax model of the...

Epoxy Bonding to Aluminum and Magnesium by
Ryan Young
I'm working on a Hummel Aviation Ultracruiser Plus. The way the
engine mounts is quite different from the mounts on most VW powered
homebuilts. The Conventional Wisdom bolts the thing to the firewall
using the clucth end bellhousing, often with an accessory case in
between.
The Ultracruiser Plus...

Why 4130 tube? by
Leon McAtee
Why do we homebuilders use 4130 tube? My old Aeronca does just fine
being made of mild steel. A bit of napkin calcs says that going up
just one tube diameter for the size tube we normally use, the area,
and the strength/weight goes up between 15% and 20%. This pretty
much offsets the difference...

Airbike Plans by
Monty
Ok, one more round of it: does anyone have a set of Airbike plans for
sale, or know of the German website that was/is producing them
(newairbike.com)?
Thanks

Dimples On Model Aircraft Could Greatly Extend Range by
Bret Cahill
Have they tried dimples on radio controlled aircraft? The size and
speed could designed around the magic Reynolds number = 100,000 where
the coefficient of drag drops precipitously.
Dimpling could vastly extent the range of large and slow as well as
small and fast radio controlled aircraft.
A...

Spratt 103 by
[email protected]
I'm interested in building a Spratt 103, see www.spratt103.com. I like to hear from anyone with specific information about it's flight qualities, based on the actual experience of flying one or observing its flight.
About 200 plans have been sold world wide and as it isn't a 10 year build, surely...

effect of changed thrust line. by
[email protected]
How does a person determine what the proper height of an engine should
be when building an airplane? If a particular engine design mandates
the prop is 4 inches, say, lower than where it would be with the
engine originally installed, what effect will it have on handling, and
what changes in...

VWs by
[email protected]
I had posted a link to a vid of a 701 weaving through the trees over
on .piloting.
At some point down the line I expressed interest in a VW powered 701.
One guy said he figured a VW would melt down in an aircraft cowling
when producing no more that 50HP.
He provided a link to Bob Hoover's blog,...

I'd posted this in the "liar and fraud" thread but someone suggested nobody
would see it as that thread had kinda petered out. It's a good summary of
the reality of Bush's Guard record:

Constant Speed Prop vs Variable Engine Timing by
Jay
Seems to me that some of the benefits of the constant speed prop were
based on the limitiations of timing (ignition and valve) of the
Lyco/Conti engines. If your engine was designed to have a large
dynamic range of efficient operation, you won't need the articulated
prop as much.

Auto conversions & gear boxes by
Dave Covert
I notice that most auto engine conversions use a gear box between the engine
and the prop. Why is that? Is it because an auto engine's peak HP is too
high for a prop to swing? Is it because auto engines weren't designed to be
pulled around by their crankshafts and don't have proper thrust...

Hey guys i'm a new pilot that really wants to build his own craft. help
me with this one issue.
I want to use a chevy ls2 or ls7 as the power plant in my craft.
now looking at everything including the hp/torque curves i've decided
running the engine around 3100 rpm should give me around 250 hp...

Master contactor question by
rich[_2_]
My homebuilt's master contactor is going bad. Sometimes when I turn it
on it doesn't make connection. It's got 1700 hours on it, so I'd just
as soon replace it. But the way the builder wired it, he's has
positive power from the battery going through the master switch to the
small terminal on the...

Diesel engine by
Bryan
Has anyone been able to find the weight on the VW V10 diesel engine? This
engine produces 550 lb/ft of torque at 2000 rpm and 310 hp at 3750 rpm.
Sounds like a great candidate for aircraft to me.
