2 aircraft cleared onto the same runway at the same time by
Tom Fleischman
This was a new one for me.
I was IFR this afternoon out of HPN for short practice flight. I was in
sequence number two at the runway waiting for departure. As the tower
controller cleared the Cessna in front of me to position and hold, he
asked him his direction of flight. The Cessna pilot...

CBAV - anyone having problems displaying Nexrad? by
Maule Driver
The last 2 times (yesterday and 1 week ago) I've tried to used CBAV to get
Nexrad images, I get a blank screeen with the word "display" on it.
Anyone have this problem recently? Is there a problem?

North Atlantic IFR routes by
JJ
When commercial aircraft fly across the big pond during IFR weather, how
does FAA and foreign Air Traffic control keep an eye on them without
radar? I understand most flights to and from Europe go up over
Newfoundland and over south of Greenland and Iceland. Can a radar see
out that far? Just...

How high is that cloud? by
Tim Hogard
I picked up a cheap infarred themometer a few days ago and discovered
that it will happily tell me the temperature of the clouds if they
are low.
It seems to me that the temp gradiant from the ground is well known
and if its consistant, this device combined with a table could tell
me how low the...

Tempest in a teapot - IFR 'training' in-between lessons by
Cecil E. Chapman
Just a question for y'all out there.
In-between lessons I've been practicing approaches using my OnTop IFR
program. It seems to work, very well, in terms of getting me to recall the
procedures and frequencies by sheer repetition when it comes to my actual
lesson day.
My question though: Is such...

ICAO Flight Plans - RNAV/RNP?? by
Dan[_1_]
All,
I am trying to figure out how to complete the ICAO information on
fltplan.com for filing a flightplan for a C182 with a Garmin 530W.
The RNAV/RNP stuff has me confused. What would the proper answers be
for an aircraft with a 530W? How about a standard Garmin 430?
I've searched high and low...

Airport lat/lon database by
Ron Garret
Anyone know where I can find a list of US airports and their lat/lon
positions? I know about the airnav site, but that only lets me get one
at a time. I need a list that I can feed into a database. (I only need
US airports with instrument approach procedures.)
Thanks,
rg

X-country training flight by
dlevy
Should I file individual legs? I don't need to land. If I file individual
legs should I let the controller know before the approach that I'd like to
open the next leg at the missed?
Thanks!

Any inside story re 430/530 WAAS cert.? by
[email protected]
This is from AvionicsWest:
"WAAS for the GNS430/530 is now postponed until sometime in 2006. I
don't "think" the problem is really a WAAS issue. You see,
Garmin plans on making the 430/530 comply with TSO 146 just as the
GNS480. TSO 146 requires an update rate of 5hz verses 1hz as the
product...

Gary IN to CVG? by
Paul kgyy
Considering a flight into CVG, which is Class B and would appreciate
some insight from the group.
1. The IFR routing with STAR is very circuitous - better to file VFR?
2. Reservation required? Flight will be on Saturday.
Any other tips - FBO, etc? Piper Arrow.

Another difference between the US and Canada. by
Roger Halstead
I had a friend ask me today how I'd cancel a flight plane that I had
never activated.
I gave the usual answer...If I never activated it, I don't need to
cancel it. If I haven't activated it past the closing time it gets
dropped. Canceling one that has been activated and flown is
*usually* not a...

ATC Careers -- Question for Newps or Chip by
Tom Sixkiller
My youngest daughter is graduating high school this May, and is looking to
do a GWBush by joining the Air National Guard. The job she's most interested
in is Air Traffic Controller. She's also contemplating doing AFROTC at the
same time (don't think she can do ROTC while being in ANG).
I _assume_...

Throwaway GPS by
Scott Moore
I thought for all of the GPS threads.
Next year, 2006, the government mandate for GPS inclusion in cell phones
starts. That means that eventually every cheap cell phone is going to have
a GPS.
GPS receivers are plentyfull now, but are getting set to proliferate into
a commondity part. The time is...

American Flyers Test Prep by

Has anyone taken the IFR written test prep from American Flyers? I'm
looking for some input on it. I was thinking of taking the Aviation
Seminar course, but its not held very often, making it much less
convenient.

FAR 91.171 interpretation by
James L. Freeman
What is the point of the phrase "at the airport of intended departure"
in FAR 91.171(b)(1)?
Interpreted literally, it would mean that while the VOR check done
with a VOT is good for 30 days, it is only valid for departures from
the airport where it was done. That makes no sense. Any...
