ILS or LOC approach? by
Dan Wegman
I just noticed an approach to Frederick, MD (FDK) entitled "ILS OR LOC RWY
23". I thought every ILS could be flown as a non-precision LOC approach so
why not just call this one the "ILS RWY 23"?

Radar by
Hankal
Weather radar.
Which weather radar are you using for preflight?
NOAA, AOPA, local news facility?
Or any others?
I am sure there are many of them.

GPS clearance puzzle by
Roy Smith
Apparently, if you file IFR HPN - MMU, you get a clearance which starts
"CMK CMK275R SAX039R SAX" (i.e. fly outbound on the CMK 275 until you
intercept the SAX 039, then fly that inbound to SAX). In the good old
days of 2 VOR receivers, this is trivial to fly; the radios don't know
or care that...

Winds on approach by
kevmor
I flew yesterday and did some practice approaches, and the winds were
about 20 knots gusting to 26-28. I've flown almost all approaches so
far in a different 172 that had a 180hp conversion. Because of the
winds, I kept almost full cruising power on the descents to try and
maintain my normal 90...

Standby Vacuum? by
Mitty
Our club is looking at upgrading a couple of airplanes to Garmin 430s, etc.
It seems to me that standby vacuum would be a good thing to add, too.
1) Good idea? Do these systems really work?
2) Recommendations on type/brand/model?
TIA

Garmin 430W/530W first impressions by
Viperdoc[_4_]
Rode back with my friend in his turbine Bonanza after the installation of a
530W/430W. We had a good chance to play with both boxes during the trip. As
before, they are very intuitive and relatively easy to operate.
The screen write rate is a lot faster than previously, and the plane
position...

Autopilots... failure modes by

I am interested in learning from everyone...
a. What autopilot your aircraft is equipped with?
b. What aircraft your autopilot is installed in?
c. What does your autopilot use for heading/altitude/attitude reference?
d. What does your autopilot use for loc/gs reference?
e. If your...

Cancelling IFR in Bravo airspace by
Terence Wilson[_2_]
On a few occasions I have filed a departure procedure to a nearby
intersection just to get on top (comments section reads "IFR to VFR on
top"). After breaking out of the clouds and advising ATC of the bases
and tops, I usually cancel IFR and proceed "own nav" with flight
following. Which brings me...

NA as alternate...redux by

Those who are interested in such arcana should look at the plates for
Moline, Illinois. Four approaches...all noted as not authorized for use as
an alternate. Hint: Don't file MLI as an alternate.

Wet, Bumpy, and Cold by
Andrew Gideon
Ha! I bet you thought that this was going to be some porn spam.
Well...perhaps not after the "Cold" bit grin.
I'd a very nice "getting feet wet" flight today. I was in the clouds for
roughly half the brief (two hour) (CDW-SWF-CDW) flight, I was in wet clouds
watching the thermostat drop, and...

Descending from MEA to land under VFR by
kevmor
In the regulations it says that you can land at an airport without an
IAP if you descend from the MEA and land under VFR, but if there is a
MOCA, can you use that instead?

Need a 2nd nav with GNS 430? by
Paul Folbrecht
I am doing some preliminary planning of the panel for my RV-9A and
wondering if a 2nd nav is really a necessity with a GNS 430 in the
panel. Seems to me that flying IFR GPS, with mostly GPS approaches in
the near future, I should not have much need for a 2nd VOR receiver to
identify intersections...

FSS on IFR Enroute charts by
kevmor
When looking at a VOR navaid box on an enroute chart, and it says the
FSS station frequency on top of the box, such as 122.1R, does that
mean receive only for them on that frequency or receive only for the
pilot? Does the pilot listen on the VOR and transmit on 122.1
(receive only for...

airport cars by

Flyers,
I was reading my Pilot Getaways Mag this morning and found an article about
something I've been thinking about myself for years.
It is an internet based Airport courtesy car club. I just signed up today
because I have a POJ (piece of junk) that I keep at ACY and every time I go
there...

Hardest approach flown so far by
Viperdoc[_4_]
Recently, on a long cross country from Portland, OR to Wisconsin, we stopped
at Helena, MT for a gas and pit stop.
Coming from the West with the winds calm, I chose the loc DME BC approach to
runway 9. Even though it's the capitol (is it capital?) of the state, there
is no radar...
