Change the rules for the National Guard.? by ArtKramr
How about we fix it so that in case of national emergency the guard goes FIRST before the regular troops. Great idea huh? Think we would still get everyone flocking to the National Guard in that case? I know Bush would have been first in line to join up.. Right? Arthur Kramer 344th BG 494th...

F-32 vs F-35 by The Raven
We all know that the X-35 won the JSF contest which is now in the strategic development phase as the F-35. At the time the competition winner was announced (LM) I wondered why Boeing would scrap their whole concept rather than push forward with it. For various political reasons Boeing could have...

Airspeed of military planes by Tetsuji Rai
Airspeed limitation below 10000ft is usually 250kts unless you have been authorized by the Administrator. However I guess it's a bit slow for military fighters. So I am curious how fast military fighters fly in the real world. I guess it's very dangerous military aircraft fly much fast among...

"Classified" supersonic aircraft? by Scott Ferrin
This from the latest AW&ST "SECRET STREAKER? On the morning of Jan. 7, an aircraft using call sign "Lockheed Test 2334" told the FAA's Albuquerque Center it would be "going supersonic somewhere above Flight Level 60 " for about 10 sec. It was flying over the Pecos Military Operating Area in...

Swift Boat Guys Caught in Some Great Big Lies by WalterM140
"But Thurlow's military records, portions of which were released yesterday to The Washington Post under the Freedom of Information Act, contain several references to 'enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire' directed at 'all units' of the five-boat flotilla. Thurlow won his own Bronze Star that...

F4U inverted gull wings by Bob M.
I recently visited the Udvar-Hazy facility and received the usual story about how the Corsair got its inverted gull wings, i.e. to accomodate the 13 ft. prop which, in turn, was necesitated by the engines power. However, the Hellcat used essentially the same engine, and IIRC also used a 13 ft....

Stretching WW2 Designs by JDupre5762
I have been wondering why were so few WW2 aircraft designs "stretched" in order to get more performance or payload? I know of the FW 190D which was stretched in the aft fuselage section in order to compensate for the installation of Jumo V 12 engine. Could other designs have benefitted from the...

Best modern jet fighter by Icarus
F-15C. Unchallenged combat record. How much combat has the SU-27/37 seen? Call me when they get some actual experience. Just FYI 2 Su 27's from Lipetsk (a Russian "Top gun" school) flew to Langley air force base where they competed against F-15's. If think it was in 1992. but what...

hi alt oxygen by Arquebus257WeaMag
Im just wondering why pure oxygen is used for high altitude flying instead of regular air. I thought prolonged exposures to breathing pure oxygen can be harmfull as you can become oxygen dependant.

Red Baron vs. Rickenbacker? by Gregorso
Did the Red Baron ever engage in battle with Eddie Rickenbacker? I have seen conflicting stories on various websites. Some say Rickenbacker shot the Baron down, ... some say the Baron died before Rickenbacker saw action. Also, is it true that Rickenbacker's parents (or one of them)...

On June 22 last year, during close air support training in Djibouti, a B-52H flying out of Diego Garcia accidentally attacked the observation post controlling the bomber. Nine M117 750-lb unguided bombs killed one U.S. Marine and wounded seven Marines and a sailor. Both parked CH-53E helicopters...
